Harry Potter and the Deathly Regime: A Study of Dystopian and Totalitarian Themes in the Final Three Harry Potter Volumes

Anotácia:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat poslední tři díly knižní série Harry Potter za účelem zjištění, zda a do jaké míry lze tato díla považovat za patřící do žánru dystopické literatury. Tohoto cíle je dosaženo za pomoci knihy Sigmunda Neumanna Permanent Revolution, která se zabývá totalitními režimy, tedy typem státního uspořádání velmi častého v dystopiích. Vybrané díly Harryho Pottera jsou také napříč celou prací průběžně porovnávány se známými dystopickými literárními díly, aby byla demonstrována podobnost témat obsažených jak v Harry Potterovi, tak v čistě dystopické literatuře.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the final three volumes of the Harry Potter series to determine whether and to what extent these books can be considered to belong to the genre of dystopian literature. This goal is achieved with the help of Sigmund Neumann's Permanent Revolution, which deals with totalitarian regimes, a type of political system very common in dystopias. Throughout the thesis, the selected Harry Potter volumes are also continuously compared with well-known dystopias to demonstrate the similarities of the themes contained in both Harry Potter and purely dystopian literature.
