Emotion regulation of Anxiety in young adulthood in the context of Self-determination theory

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jaká je souvislost mezi vnímanou rodičovskou podporou autonomie, vnímanou rodičovskou kontrolou, vnímanou podporou autonomie ze strany přátel, mindfulness a integrovanou emoční regulací, respektive dysregulací úzkosti u vynořujících se dospělých. Celá práce byla zasazená do rámce sebedeterminační teorie. Data, která jsme získali pomocí online dotazníku, jsme analyzovali pomocí regresních analýz (respektive regresních analýz s moderací) a pomocí t-testu pro dva nezávislé výběry. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 225 mladých lidí, jejich průměrný věk byl 22,93 let (SD = 2,55, Min = 18, Max = 29). Jako žena se identifikovalo 165 osob (73,3 %), jako muž 59 osob (26,2 %) a jinak se identifikovala jedna osoba (0,4 %). Zjistili jsme, že podpora autonomie ze strany přátel pozitivně souvisí s integrovanou emoční regulací úzkosti. Mezi rodičovskou podporou autonomie a integrovanou emoční regulací nebyl nalezen žádný vztah. Mezi mindfulness a integrovanou emoční regulací byl nalezen pozitivní vztah, který však při kontrole ostatních prediktorů nebyl signifikantní. Dále jsme odhalili negativní souvislost mezi mindfulness a dysregulací úzkosti při kontrole pohlaví, věku a rodičovské kontroly. Rodičovská kontrola s dysregulací při kontrole ostatních prediktorů nesouvisela. Pohlaví souviselo s dysregulací i při vzájemné kontrole prediktorů – konkrétně identifikování se jako muž negativně souviselo s mírou dysregulace. T-test pro dva nezávislé výběry potvrdil, že ženy v současném souboru vykazovaly vyšší míru dysregulace úzkosti než muži. Dále jsme nenalezli podporu pro předpoklad, že mindfulness moderuje vztah mezi rodičovskou kontrolou a emoční dysregulací. Součástí práce je také psychometrické ověření nově přeloženého nástroje Emotion Regulation Inventory.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explore the relationship between perceived parental autonomy support, perceived parental control, perceived autonomy support from friends, mindfulness and integrative emotion regulation, and dysregulation of anxiety in emerging adulthood. The thesis was embedded in the framework of self-determination theory. We analyzed the data from the survey. The sample consisted of 225 young people. Their average age was 22.93 years (SD = 2.55, Min = 18, Max = 29). 165 (73,3 %) par-ticipants were female, 59 (26,2 %) male, and 1 (0,4 %) other. We found that autonomy support from friends was positively related to integrated emotional regulation of anxiety. No relationship was found between parental autonomy support and integrated emotional regulation. A positive relationship was found between mindfulness and integrated emotional regulation, but it was nonsignificant when controlling for other predictors. We also found a negative relationship between mindfulness and dysregulation when controlling for other predictors. Parental control was not related to dysregulation when controlling for other predictors. Gender was related to dysregulation even when controlling for predictors—specifically, identifying as male was negatively related to the level of dysregulation. A t-test for two independent samples confirmed that women in the current sample showed higher levels of anxiety dysregulation than men. Furthermore, we did not find support for the assumption that mindfulness moderates the relationship between parental control and emotion dysregulation. Furthermore, we verified the psychometric properties of the newly translated Emotion Regulation Inventory.
