The Relationship between Hand Shape and Performance in Sports and Games

Abstract:

The ratio between the length of the 2nd and 4th finger (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait, which is considered to be an indicator of the ratio between the levels of testosterone and estradiol during the human prenatal development. Many studies have dealt with the analysis of a relationship between the prenatal sex hormones and the performance, reproductive success, sexual orientation or susceptibility to some diseases. The aim of this master thesis was to examine the interrelation between the general anthropometry of hand (including the 2D:4D ratio) and performance in the 10-km endurance running, 100-m sprint running, aggression and response time in common population and population of athletes. The aggression was measured by the BPAQ inventory (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire), the response time was determined by a simple computer software. The hand measurements were obtained from the scans of its ventral surface recorded for each participant using the image scanner. Among all of the used measurements and ratios, the most significant relationship with studied traits (except for the response time) was discovered in the 2D:4D ratio. This ratio correlated the most strongly with the performance in endurance running, less strongly with the performance in sprinting and the aggression, while this correlation was always stronger in males than in females. Lower (i.e. more masculine) 2D:4D ratio always indicated better performance or stronger expression (shorter time in the both running events and higher aggression score). In case of the response time, more significant relationship was found with the 4D:5D ratio. Obtained results suggest that expression of studied traits might be influenced to a certain extent by the levels of prenatal sex hormones.

Abstract:

Poměr délky druhého a čtvrtého prstu ruky (2D:4D) je sexuálně dimorfním znakem, považovaným za ukazatel poměru hladin testosteronu a estradiolu během prenatálního vývoje jedince. Mnohé studie se zabývaly zkoumáním vztahu mezi prenatálními pohlavními hormony, reprezentovanými tímto poměrem, a výkonností, reprodukční úspěšností, sexuální orientací nebo náchylností k některým nemocem. Cílem této diplomové práce bylo prostudovat souvislosti mezi celkovou antropometrií ruky (včetně 2D:4D poměru) a výkonem ve vytrvalostním běhu na 10 km, sprintu na 100 m, agresivitou a reakčním časem u běžné populace a populace sportovců. Pro hodnocení agresivity byl v práci použitý dotazník BPAQ (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire), reakční čas byl určován jednoduchým počítačovým programem. Rozměry ruky byly měřeny na snímcích ventrální strany ruky, které byly u každého účastníka zaznamenané pomocí stolního skeneru. Ze všech použitých rozměrů a poměrů byl nejsilnější vztah se zkoumanými znaky (s výjimkou reakčního času) zjištěn u poměru 2D:4D. Tento poměr nejsilněji koreloval s výkonností ve vytrvalostním běhu a slaběji s výkonností ve sprintu a agresivitou, přičemž korelace byla vždy silnější u mužů. Nižší (tj. maskulinnější) 2D:4D poměr vždy znamenal lepší výkon či silnější projev (kratší čas v obou běžeckých disciplínách a vyšší skóre agresivity). V případě reakčního času byl zjištěn silnější vztah s poměrem 4D:5D. Výsledky naznačují, že projev sledovaných znaků může být do určité míry ovlivněn prenatálními hladinami pohlavních hormonů.
