The role of ethnicity in ethnic conflicts: the case of Yugoslavia

Abstract:

This work focuses on the role of ethnicity in ethnic conflicts. It is primarily about the conflict that took place in the territory of former Yugoslavia at the end of the last millennium. The central theme of this work is the disintegrative factors that contributed to the breakup of Yugoslavia, with the greatest emphasis being placed on ethnicity. The work highlights the significant role of ethnicity in conflicts and also points out that ethnic structure was a key element in the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia, which led to ethnic cleansing. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to demonstrate that ethnicity was the reason why the breakup of Yugoslavia was accompanied by such violence and how it escalated to ethnic cleansing. The hypothesis of this bachelor's thesis is that the role of ethnicity is more significant in conflicts than it may appear to the casual observer. During the writing of this work, we relied on both domestic and foreign sources, which helped us obtain sufficient context. The most important source for this work was an article by Róbert Ištok titled "The Yugoslav Crisis: Slavs against Slavs." Equally important was the work "Causes of the Breakup of Yugoslavia" by Ivan Majchút and Tatiana Vaššová. The methods we used in writing this work are analysis, comparative analysis, and historical method.

Abstract:

Táto práca je zameraná na rolu etnicity v etnických konfliktoch. Primárne sa zaoberá konfliktom, ktorý sa odohral na území bývalej Juhoslávie na konci minulého tisícročia. Ústrednou témou tejto práce sú dezintegračné činitele, ktoré prispeli k rozpadu Juhoslávie, pričom najväčší dôraz je kladený práve na etnicitu. Práca poukazuje na významnú rolu etnicity v konfliktoch a zároveň poukazuje na to, že práve etnická štruktúra bola kľúčovým elementom pri násilnom rozpade Juhoslávie, ktorý viedol k etnickým čistkám. Cieľom bakalárskej práce je poukázať na to, že etnicita bola dôvodom, prečo bol rozpad Juhoslávie sprevádzaný takými násilnosťami a ako dokázal eskalovať až do etnických čistiek. Hypotéza tejto bakalárskej práce je, že rola etnicity je v konfliktoch významnejšia, ako sa bežnému pozorovateľovi môže zdať. Počas písania práce sme sa opierali o domáce aj zahraničné zdroje, ktoré nám pomohli získať dostatočný kontext. Najdôležitejším zdrojom pre túto prácu bol článok Róberta Ištoka s názvom Juhoslovanská kríza: Slovania proti Slovanom. Rovnako dôležitá bola aj práca Príčiny rozpadu Juhoslávie od Ivana Majchúta a Tatiany Vaššovej. Metódy, ktoré sme použili pri písaní tejto práce sú analýza, komparatívna a historická metóda.
