Transfer of grammatical gender from mother tongue to foreign language

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on acquisition of grammatical gender in second language and on its transfer from mother to foreign language. In theoretical part we present psycholinguistic theories of second language acquisition and acquisition of grammatical gender. Furthermore, we define transfer and present concerning theories and research. The empirical part of this study presents a test, specifically designed to measure transfer of grammatical gender from mother to foreign language. Valid data were obtained from 72 participants from three language backgrounds: English, German and Hispanic. The results from statistical analysis confirmed the existence of transfer of grammatical gender from mother to foreign language, either in positive or negative sense. We have also confirmed the hypothesis that on-line processing leads to higher level of mistakes than off-line processing. We found no correlation between success of grammatical gender acquisition and mother tongue. Finally, we discussed limitations of this research and we suggested a way for possible future research.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá osvojovaním si gramatického rodu v cudzom jazyku a jeho transferom z materinského do cudzieho jazyka. V teoretickej časti sú popísané jednotlivé psycholingvistické teórie zaoberajúce sa osvojovaním si jazyka a gramatického rodu. Ďalej je definovaný transfer a sú predstavené teórie a výskumy, ktoré sa ním zaoberali. Vo výskumnej časti je predstavený test, špecificky zostrojený na meranie transferu gramatického rodu z materinského do osvojovaného jazyka. Platné dáta boli získané od 72 osôb z troch jazykových prostredí: anglofónneho, germanofónneho a hispanofónneho. Výsledky získané štatistickou analýzou potvrdili existenciu transferu gramatického rodu z materinského do cudzieho jazyka, v pozitívnom aj negatívnom smere. Zároveň bolo potvrdená hypotéza, že on-line spracovávanie vedie k vyššiemu počtu chýb ako off-line spracovávanie. Nebol zistený vzťah medzi úspešnosťou osvojenia si rodu a materinským jazykom. V diskusii boli rozobrané obmedzenia tohto výskumu a bolo navrhnuté ďalšie smerovanie výskumu.
