Tragedy in Velke Mezirici and its remembrance

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá událostí, která se stala na samém konci druhé světové války ve Velkém Meziříčí. Dne 6. května 1945 toto město po vzoru Prahy povstalo proti německé branné moci, avšak Němci proti povstalcům tvrdě zasáhli a v noci ze 6. na 7. května obsadili radnici, kde účastníci povstání přespávali. Druhého dne bylo ve městě vyhlášeno stanné právo, na radnici probíhaly brutální výslechy členů RNV, a 57 z nich bylo odpoledne zastřeleno na březích místních dvou řek, Balinky a Oslavy. Kromě detailních informací o průběhu „Velkomeziříčské tragédie“, jak se tato událost nazývá, nalezneme v této práci i informace o trestním stíhání německých zločinců, ale i místních obyvatel, kteří byli obviněni ze zrady. Vzhledem k tomu, že tato událost má ve městě hlubokou tradici, zabývá se práce i její památkou. Především se práce soustředí na to, jak se měnil obsah pietních aktů v průběhu let, a zda se nějak odlišoval charakter „oslav“ během komunistického režimu od současnosti.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is event, that happened at the end of the Second World War in Velké Meziříčí. On May 6, 1945, following the example of Prague, the city revolted against the German armed forces, but the Germans cracked down hard on the insurgents and occupied the town hall on the night of May 6-7, where the participants of the uprising slept. The next day, martial law was declared in the city, and brutal interrogations of revolutionary national comitee members took place at the town hall, and 57 of them were executed in the afternoon on the banks of two local rivers, Balinka and Oslava. In addition to detailed information about the course of the "Velké Meziříčí tragedy", as this event is called, in this work we also find information about criminal prosecution of German criminals, as well as local residents who have been accused of treason. Due to the fact that this event has a deep tradition in the city, the work also deals with its legacy. In this case, I deal with how the content of acts of piety has changed over the years, and whether the nature of the celebrations during the communist regime differed from the present.
