Are female city police officers discriminated against in terms of pay?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice diskriminace žen na trhu práce, konkrétně na pozici strážník městské policie v České republice. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda existují mzdové rozdíly mezi pohlavími na dané pozici ve veřejném sektoru a pokud ano, tak do jaké míry jsou tyto rozdíly způsobeny mzdovou diskriminací. V teoretické části jsou představeny hlavní druhy a modely diskriminace. Pozornost je věnována především mzdové diskriminaci, u které jsou uvedeny i způsoby jejího měření. V praktické části práce jsou využita data, která byla získána pomocí dotazníkového šetření na území České republiky. Pomocí metody nejmenších čtverců je vytvořen model, který zkoumá vliv několika proměnných na výši mzdy. Pro lepší vypovídající hodnotu je vytvořen upravený model, do kterého jsou zahrnuty proměnné pohlaví, počet opracovaných hodiny za měsíc, platová třída, počet let praxe a dvě interakční proměnné. Proměnná pohlaví, která je pro můj výzkum stěžejní, se v modelu ukazuje jako významná. Muži vydělávají v průměru o 32,65 % více než ženy se stejnými charakteristikami. Tuto mzdovou mezeru však nemůžeme celou označit za diskriminaci, neboť na výši mzdy mohou mít vliv i jiné faktory, které nebyly do modelu zahrnuty. V závěru jsou navržena doporučení pro přesnější výsledky při budoucím zkoumání.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of discrimination against women in the labor market, specifically in the position of city police officer in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether there are wage differences between the sexes in a given position in the public sector and if so, to what extent these differences are caused by wage discrimination. The theoretical part presents the main types and models of discrimination. Attention is paid mainly to wage discrimination, for which the methods of its measurement are also given. The practical part of the work uses data that were obtained using a questionnaire survey in the Czech Republic. Using the least squares method, a model is created that examined the effect of several variables on wage levels. For better significance, a modified model is created, which included gender variables, number of hours worked per month, salary scale position, number of years of experience and two interaction variables. The gender variable, which is central to my research, proves to be significant in the model. Men earn on average 32.65% more than women with the same characteristics. However, this wage gap cannot be described as discrimination in its entirety, as other factors that were not included in the model may also affect the amount of wages. Finally, recommendations are proposed for more accurate results in future research.
