The non-standard use of the -s ending in the second person singular of the verb in past simple tense

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the non-standard ending -s in the second person singular of the verb in past simple tense. It examines this phenomenon both in terms of its internal linguistic structure and its distribution within diachronic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic perspective. In the research part, on the basis of data from the ESLORA corpus, the influence of the relative frequency of the preterite form and the degree of education on the production of non-standard forms with the ending -s is investigated by the method of variational analysis. The analysis confirms the degree of education as a significant predictor of the non-standard ending -s and a higher probability of its occurrence in speakers with primary education. Despite the finding of statistical significance of frequency on the choice of standard or non-standard variant in previous studies, here this relationship was not confirmed and the factor of speaker sex emerged as a second significant predictor.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá nespisovnou koncovkou -s ve druhé osobě jednotného čísla slovesa v minulém čase prostém. Věnuje se tomuto fenoménu jak z hlediska jeho vnitřní lingvistické struktury, tak z pohledu jeho distribuce v rámci diachronní, diatopické, diastratické i diafazické perspektivy. Ve výzkumné části na základě dat z korpusu ESLORA metodou variační analýzy je zkoumán vliv relativní frekvence preteritního tvaru a stupně vzdělání na produkci nespisovných tvarů s koncovkou -s. Analýza potvrdila stupeň vzdělání jako významný prediktor nespisovné koncovky -s a vyšší pravděpodobnost jejího výskytu u mluvčích s primárním vzděláním. Navzdory nálezu statistické významnosti frekvence na volbu spisovné či nespisovné varianty v předchozích studiích, zde tento vztah nebyl potvrzen a jako druhý významný prediktor se zde projevil faktor pohlaví mluvčích.
