The Role of Intercultural Differences in the Effective Communication Among Members of an International Virtual Team: An Examination of a Czech Multinational Company

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je odhalit, zda interkulturní rozdíly snižují či zvyšují efektivní komunikaci mezi členy vybraného mezinárodního virtuálního týmu v české nadnárodní organizaci. Vzhledem k podobě výzkumu a jeho cílům, byla zvolena kvalitativní výzkumná strategie s užitím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů jako hlavní techniky. V teoretické části práce je prezentováno několik konceptů. V popředí stojí interkulturní komunikace, dimenze národních kultur a specifika pracovního týmu – to jsou také ústřední koncepty této práce. V empirické části autorka práce hledala a objevovala vztahy a souvislosti mezi efektivní komunikací a kulturními dimenzemi G. Hofstedeho a E. T. Halla. Na základě tohoto výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že aby mohli členové týmu dosáhnout svého cíle, uplatňují se jako důsledek kulturních rozdílů v pracovním týmu různé komunikační strategie. Výzkum také přináší myšlenku, že kulturní podobnost členů virtuálního pracovního týmu zvyšuje efektivnost komunikace a pomáhá jim dosahovat vytyčených cílů. Role interkulturních rozdílů v efektivní komunikaci je tedy považována v týmu za významnou, avšak do jisté míry limitující. Přínosem této práce je nejen přehled interkulturních rozdílů vstupujících do procesu efektivní komunikace, ale také doporučení pro manažera a inspirace pro další vedoucí pracovníky.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to explore whether intercultural differences enhance or slow down effective communication among members of selected international virtual team in the Czech multinational company. Qualitative research with the technique of semi-structured interviews was chosen as a suitable design for the aim of the thesis. In the theoretical section, intercultural communication, national cultures dimensions and specifics of the selected team are presented as the main concepts of the thesis. In the empirical section, relations and continuity between effective communication and cultural dimensions (according to G. Hofstede and E. T. Hall) were examined and revealed. The research has found that as a consequence of intercultural differences, all kinds of strategies are being developed among team members to reach their goals. The role of the intercultural differences in effective communication is considered as significant but limiting to some extent. The research presents a theory that cultural similarity of the team members increases effectiveness of the communication and helps them in reaching their goals. The merit of the thesis is not only presenting intercultural differences with influencing process of effective communication but also recommendations for the team manager. It can be also naturally utilized as an inspiration for other managers or leaders inside and outside the company.
