The effect of extreme load on attention in military combat units

Abstract:

Vojenské prostředí je charakteristické svou náročností a množstvím výzev, které obsahuje. Vojáci jsou mnohdy v rámci své profese vystaveni multi-stresorovému prostředí, kde se musí vypořádat s fyzickou i psychickou zátěží. V těchto podmínkách je kladen důraz na spolehlivý kognitivní výkon, který hraje významnou roli při realizaci vojenských operací. Tato práce sledovala příslušníky vojenských bojových jednotek během náročného, několikadenního zátěžového cvičení. V průběhu cvičení byl opakovaně administrován test pozornosti a byly měřeny fyziologické parametry, vycházející z variability srdeční frekvence (HRV). Získané výsledky přinesly následující zjištění: Nejprve byly hledány vzájemné vztahy mezi výkonem v testu pozornosti a fyziologickými parametry. Existence vzájemných vztahů byla potvrzena mezi výkonem soustředění a aktivitou autonomní nervové soustavy, indexem únavy, tělesným stresem a stresovým skórem. S počtem zpracovaných položek souvisela aktivita autonomní nervové soustavy, index únavy a tělesný stres. Dále pak byla zjištěna existence vztahu mezi celkovou chybovostí a indexem únavy a elektro-srdeční stabilitou. Výsledky ukazují, že velkou roli při výkonu pozornosti hrála únava a stres měl protektivní vliv na výkon. Druhá část analýzy měla za cíl sestavit model, který bude schopen predikovat úspěšnost ve sledovaném zátěžovém cvičení. Tento model dokázal vysvětlit 37,5 % rozptylu predikované proměnné a správně určit 72,7 % případů příslušnosti do jedné ze skupin dle úspěchu. Ačkoliv je model schopný do určité míry predikovat úspěšnost, navrhuji jej v dalších výzkumech rozšířit, čímž by se dala zvýšit jeho přesnost.

Abstract:

The military environment is characterized by its difficulty and the many challenges it contains. Soldiers are often exposed to a multi-stressor environment within their profession, where they must cope with physical and mental stress. Emphasis is placed on reliable cognitive performance in these conditions, playing a significant role in the execution of military operations. This study observed members of military combat units during an intense multi-day stress-inducing exercise. Throughout the exercise, attention tests were repeatedly administered, and physiological parameters based on heart rate variability (HRV) were measured. The obtained results yielded the following findings: Firstly, the correlations between attention test performance and physiological parameters were examined. The existence of correlations was confirmed between concentration performance and autonomic nervous system activity, fatigue index, physical stress, and stress score. The autonomic nervous system activity, fatigue index and body stress were related to the number of items processed. Furthermore, a relationship was identified between overall error rate and fatigue index and electro cardiac stability. The results indicate that fatigue played a significant role in attention performance, and stress had a protective effect on performance. The second part of the analysis aimed to construct a model capable of predicting success in the observed stress-inducing exercise. This model explained 37.5% of the variance in the predicted variable and accurately identified the membership of 72.7% of cases into success-defined groups. Although the model can predict success to a certain extent, I suggest expanding it in further research to enhance its accuracy.
