American Space by Yves Berger and Jacques Poulin.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of the image of American space and American myth in the novels from chosen authors – Yves Berger and Jacques Poulin. We attempt to provide the comparative analysis of two novels from Quebec novelist Jacques Poulin : Volkswagen Blues and L’Homme de la Saskatchewan and three novels from French novelist Yves Berger : La Pierre et le Saguaro, Le Fou d’Amérique and Les Matins du Nouveau Monde. The aim of the present diploma thesis is to find and determine the similarities and the differences in the approaches of French and French-Canadian novelists concerning the representation of American space, American myth and American dream in their novels. The theoretical part will introduce the concept of literary space and its function as well as the mythical aspect of space. Then we will define American myth and specify what it means in European and Quebec literary context. Afterwards, the analytical part will present the brief summary of our novels and we will analyse more deeply the major themes in each novel. In the end, the actual comparative analysis will be provided in which the similarities and differences of the novels will be shown as based on our given criteria.

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce se zaměřuje na porovnání obrazu amerického prostoru a amerického mýtu v dílech vybraných autorů – Yvesa Bergera a Jacquesa Poulina. Naší snahou je vytvořit komparativní analýzu dvou románů od quebeckého autora Jacquesa Poulina : Volkswagen Blues a L’Homme de la Saskatchewan a tří románů od francouzského autora Yvesa Bergera : La Pierre et le Saguaro, Le Fou d’Amérique a Les Matins du Nouveau Monde. Cílem předložené diplomové práce je najít a určit podobnosti a rozdíly v přístupu francouzského a francouzsko-kanadského autora při zobrazení amerického prostoru, amerického mýtu, jako také amerického snu ve svých románech. V teoretické části práce představíme literární prostor, jeho funkci v románu a mytičnost prostoru. Dále definujeme americký mýtus a upřesníme, co znamená v evropském a v quebeckém literárním kontextu. Následovně v analytické části seznámíme čtenáře se stručným obsahem románů a podrobněji rozebereme hlavní témata v každém z nich. Na závěr provedeme samotnou komparativní analýzu, v které postavíme vedle sebe díla obou autorů a určíme podobnosti a rozdíly na základě námi stanovených kritérií.
