Measuring Software Development Contributions using Git

Abstract:

Spravedlivé hodnocení softwarových projektu z pohledu jednotlivých přispěvatelů je obtížný a časově náročný úkol. Tato práce se zaměřuje na měření příspěvku především z nástroje pro správu verzí zdrojového kódu nazvaného Git. Repozitáře však neuchovávají pouze řádky kódu. Vzdálená strana repozitáře uchovává další informace ve formě Issues a Pull Requests. Výsledkem práce je nástroj nazvaný Mura (Masaryk Univerzita Repository Analyzer) nebo Moth (MUNI Open-source Tutoring Helper), oba názvy jsou přijatelné, protože oba odkazují na hmyz v řádu Lepidoptera. Hlavním účelem Mury je pomoci lektorům na institucích poskytujících vzdělání v oblasti Výpočetních věd, poskytnutím odhadu příspěvku do týmového projektu. Mura se snaží být snadno rozšířitelná o podporu více jazyků. Sémantické analyzátory pro Python, Java a C# jsou součástí repozitáře, ze kterého lze nástroj klonovat. Integrace s komunitní edicí SonarQube prostřednictvím API je podporována a části výstupů z SonarQube jsou zahrnuty do konečného váženého výstupu. S touto informací mohou lektoři pomoci týmům, které mají problémy s komunikací uvnitř týmu, nebo jednotilví členové nevykazují rovnoměrné rozložení úsilí vložené do projektu.

Abstract:

Fairly evaluating the effort put into a software development project from the perspective of each individual contributor is a difficult and time-consuming task. The approach in this thesis focuses on measuring contribution primarily from the source version control tool called Git. Repositories are, however, not just holding lines of code. The remote side of a repository holds further information in the form of issues and pull requests. The outcome of the thesis is a tool called Mura (Masaryk University Repository Analyzer) or Moth (MUNI Open-source Tutoring Helper), both names are accepted since they both refer to an insect in the order Lepidoptera. Mura's primary purpose is to assist tutors at institutions providing education in the field of Comp. Sci., by providing an estimate of contribution to a team project for each participating contributor. Mura aims to be easily extendable to support multiple languages. Semantic analyzers for Python, Java and C# are bundled in the repository from which it can be cloned. Integration with SonarQube Community edition via an API is supported and parts of its outputs are included in the final output. With this information tutors can aid teams that are struggling with team communication or have unbalanced effort put into the project, to ensure each members fulfills their part in the project.
