On Cognitive Synonymy

Anotácia:

The aim of this thesis is to examine two adjectives – deep and profound – which are generally regarded as synonyms. As it focuses on the nouns the given adjectives co-occur with and form collocations with, the thesis may serve as an overview of differences in meanings of the analyzed adjectives which manifest themselves at a collocational level. It concentrates both on the nouns which co-occur with both of the adjectives and on the nouns which are restricted to only one of the adjectives. The analysis is mainly based on the British National Corpus (BNC).
