Development of Romantic Relationships Representation in Adolescence and Level of Commitment in Them

Abstract:

Awareness Conceptions of Romantic Relationships and Level of Commitment by 19- year- old Adolescents Abstract The focus of the present study is aimed on awareness conceptions of romantic relationships and level of commitment in these relationships by 19-year-old adolescents, respondents of ELSPAC study (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood). Descriptive characteristics of romantic relationships were collected from 209 adolescents by semi-structured interviews and were coded into 8 categories. Respondents were also asked to provide written statement about romantic relationships; the level of commitment was rated based on manifestation of commitment in these written statements. The most frequent responses to the question: „What does it mean to you to date someone?“ contained the concept of affiliation in romantic relationships, e.g. time spent together, friendship. Girls were more likely to describe romantic relationships by characteristics as support, care and trust; characteristics typical for attachment theory. Non-manifested commitment was most frequently recognized in written responses, although manifested commitment showed to be significantly different for girls than for boys.

Uvedomované predstavy o romantických vzťahoch a miera záväzku v nich u devätnásťročných adolescentov Anotácia Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá uvedomovanými predstavami o romantických vzťahoch a mierou zväzku v nich u 19 – ročných adolescentov, respondentov štúdie ELSPAC. Deskriptívne charakteristiky romantických vzťahov od 209 adolescentov získané pomocou semištrukturovaného rozhovoru boli kódované do 8 kategórií. Miera záväzku bola hodnotená na základe manifestácie záväzku v spísaných výpovediach respondentov v oblasti partnerstva. Najčastejšími odpoveďami na otázku „Čo si pod tým predstavíte, keď sa povie s niekým chodiť?“ boli výpovede týkajúce sa afiliácie – spoločne trávený čas, priateľstvo. Dievčatá svoje romantické vzťahy popisovali predovšetkým charakteristikami citovej väzby - opora, poskytovanie starostlivosti, dôvera. V porovnaní s chlapcami tieto odpovede dievčat boli signifikantne častejšie udávané. V rámci spísaných výpovedí v oblasti partnerstva sa najväčšmi vyskytol nemanifestovaný záväzok, i keď u dievčat sa ako signifikantne významný v porovnaní s chlapcami ukázal manifestovaný záväzok.
