Work-life balance in the Management Consulting

Abstract:

Konceptu work-life balance se v posledních letech věnuje stále více pozornosti. Jeho kořeny sahají do začátku 60. let minulého století, kdy převážně akademici ze západního kulturního okruhu začali zkoumat vztah mezi časem stráveným v práci a časem, který zaměstnanci tráví mimo pracoviště. Od této doby se obor vyvinul do soudobé podoby, se kterou je pracováno v empirické části práce. Pro management consulting je work-life balance obzvlášť aktuální a důležitý, protože většina zaměstnanců z management consultingu se setkává s tlakem na svůj work-life balance a někteří mají svůj work-life balance v nerovnováze. Cílem této diplomové práce je kriticky zhodnotit současný stav konceptu Work-life balance ve vybraných management consultingových firmách působících v České republice. K naplnění cíle sloužily poznatky z obecné teorie vážící se k work-life balance a informace získané prostřednictvím hloubkových rozhovorů se zaměstnanci v externím a interním management consultingu. Dalším zdrojem informací pro empirickou část bylo dotazníkové šetření. Cílová skupina byla oproti hloubkovým rozhovorům rozšířena o jednotlivce, kteří v management consultingu pracovali a v současné době už nepracují a dále o jedince, kteří mají o práci v management consultingu zájem, ale chybí jim předchozí zkušenost z tohoto oboru. Závěrem jsou tyto poznatky mezi sebou vzájemně porovnávány a v poslední kapitole autor prezentuje doporučení pro management consultingové firmy v České republice.

Abstract:

The concept of work-life balance has received increasing attention in recent years. Its roots go back to the early 1960s when academics from a predominantly Western cultural background began to explore the relationship between time spent at work and time spent by employees outside the workplace. Since then, the field has evolved into the contemporary form with which the empirical part of the thesis is concerned. For management consulting, the work-life balance is particularly relevant and important because most employees experience pressure on their work-life balance and some have their work-life balance out of balance. This thesis aims to critically evaluate the current state of the concept of work-life balance in selected management consulting firms operating in the Czech Republic. The findings from general theory related to work-life balance and information obtained through in-depth interviews with employees in external and internal management consulting firms were used to achieve this goal. Another source of information for the empirical part was a questionnaire survey. Compared to the in-depth interviews, the target group was expanded to include individuals who have worked in management consulting and are currently no longer working in management consulting, as well as individuals who are interested in working in management consulting but lack previous experience in the field. Finally, these findings are compared with each other and in the last chapter, the author presents recommendations for management consulting firms in the Czech Republic.
