Intercultural Marriages and Development of Intercultural Communicative Competence (a multi-case study)

Anotace:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je sledovať dynamiku komunikácie v medzikultúrnych manželstvách, najmä medzi jednotlivcami z rôznych kultúrnych prostredí, a rozvoj medzikultúrnych komunikačných kompetencií potrebných na predchádzanie možným nedorozumeniam. Tento výskum sa začína teoretickým rámcom, ktorý predstavuje kľúčové pojmy súvisiace s touto témou, a to medzikultúrne manželstvá, medzikultúrnu komunikačnú kompetenciu a výzvy, ktorým môžu tieto páry čeliť. Empirická časť je založená na metodológii, výbere vzorky, vypracovaní výskumu, získaných výsledkoch, obmedzeniach a záverečnom zhrnutí. Hlavným cieľom diplomovej práce a jej výskumu je sledovať, akým spôsobom ovplyvňuje používanie angličtiny ako spoločného jazyka v interkultúrnych manželstvách dynamiku komunikácie vrátane nedorozumení medzi partnermi z odlišného kultúrneho prostredia. Na získaní týchto poznatkov sa podieľalo šesť párov, ktoré sa podelili o svoje postrehy v polo-štruktúrovaných rozhovoroch. Z výskumu vyplýva, že komunikácia medzi partnermi je založená na jasnej a otvorenej komunikácii, ako aj na akceptácii komunikačných štýlov a na zvedavosti ohľadom kultúrneho zázemia. Zistilo sa, že páry sú v neustálom procese rozvoja medzikultúrnych komunikačných zručností. Tento proces často prebieha automaticky, bez toho aby si to uvedomovali, prípadne sa o to vedome snažili. Z rozhovorov taktiež vyplynulo, že práve používanie angličtiny ako dorozumievajúceho jazyka im mnoho krát uľahčuje vyjadrovanie svojich pocitov, cítia sa byť autentickejší a častokrát viac trpezlivejší v riešení nedorozumení.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to observe the communication dynamics in intercultural marriages, especially between individuals from different cultural backgrounds, and the development of intercultural communication competence needed to prevent possible misunderstandings. This research starts with the theoretical framework that presents the key concepts related to this topic, namely intercultural marriages, intercultural communicative competence and the challenges that these couples may face. The empirical part is based on the methodology, the sampling, the elaboration of the research, the results obtained, the limitations and the final conclusion. The main aim of the diploma thesis and its research is to explore how the use of English as a shared language in intercultural marriages affects the communication dynamics, including misunderstandings between partners from different cultural backgrounds. To achieve this, six couples participated and shared their insights in semi-structured interviews. The research shows that communication between partners is based on clear and open communication, as well as on the acceptance of communication styles and curiosity about cultural backgrounds. The couples were found to be in a constant process of developing intercultural communication skills. This process often takes place automatically, without them being aware of it or making a conscious effort to do so. The interviews also revealed that it is the use of English as a language of communication that many times makes it easier for them to express their feelings, feel more authentic and often more patient in solving misunderstandings.
