Quizlet and its impact on Czech secondary school students' habits and effectiveness of learning new vocabulary

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem výuky a studia slovní zásoby. Důraz je kladen na Quizlet, což je nástroj, který využívá tzv. flashcards k tomu, aby pomohl studentům učit se nová slovíčka. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda představení tohoto nástroje studentům střední školy ovlivní způsob, jakým se učí nové slovní zásobě. A pokud ano, jestli tato změna vede k lepším výsledkům v testech. První část práce představuje čtenáři teoretický základ ohledně slovní zásoby, počítačových a komunikačních technologií (IKT) a Quizletu. Představuje důležitost slovní zásoby a jak se jí mohou studenti naučit. Výzkum v oblasti IKT představuje novou generaci studentů, která považuje technologie za běžnou součást svých životů. V poslední části teorie se do detailu představuje nástroj Quizlet. Druhá část práce představuje praktický výzkum, který proběhl na jedné z českých středních škol. K výzkumu byly využity dvě metody – několik dotazníků a testů bylo využito k tomu, aby autor mohl odpovědět na definované otázky výzkumu. Výsledky potvrdily počáteční hypotézu o tom, že Quizlet ovlivňuje způsob, jakým se studenti učí nové slovní zásobě. Studenti se s nástrojem učí více a častěji. Neučí se také striktně doma nebo ve škole, jako studenti, kterým nástroj nebyl představen. Všichni účinkující také potvrdili, že budou využívat Quizlet i v budoucnu. Co se týče výsledků v testech ukazují výsledky pouze mírné a zanedbatelné zlepšení.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis deals with a topic of vocabulary learning. The emphasis is set on Quizlet, a tool that uses flashcards to help students learn autonomously when- and wherever they want to. The aim is to determine whether Quizlet can affect the way students learn new vocabulary. And if so, if it leads to better test results. The first section of the paper provides the reader with theoretical background on vocabulary, information and communication technologies (ICT) and Quizlet. It describes the importance of vocabulary knowledge and how it can be obtained. The research in the area of ICT shows that there is a new generation of students who are strongly inclined to the usage of technology in their lives. The tool Quizlet is fully presented to the reader in the end of the section. The second section of the paper describes the practical research conducted on one of Czech secondary schools. The experimental work is done by two different means – several questionnaires and tests are used to answer the research questions. The results confirm the hypothesis that Quizlet alters the way students study. Students tend to study more, and more often with Quizlet. They also do not limit their studies to either their homes or school unlike the people who do not use the tool. All the experimental subjects furthermore confirmed that they will use Quizlet in their future studies. However, when test scores are compared, there is only a slight improvement.
