Different perceptions of reality in James Joyce's "The Dead" (1914)

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on analysis of the main character from "The Dead" Gabriel Conroy within the boundaries of reality constructs. "The Dead" is part of the collection of short stories Dubliners by James Joyce. The goal of this work is to analyze different perceptions of reality and explain what reality constructs are and how they affect society and individuals. Also analyze how they interconnect with James Joyce depiction of Gabriel and how this affects Gabriel final epiphany and finally to prove that James Joyce understood that perception of reality and it is not coincidence that James Joyce decided to write story like "The Dead".

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje hlavní postavu z "The Dead" Gabriela Conroye v rámci konstruktů reality. "The Dead" je součástí sbírky povídek Dubliners napsané Jamesem Joycem. Cílem této práce je analyzovat rozdílné vnímání reality a vysvětlit o co se jedná pod pojmem konstrukty reality a jak tyto konstrukty ovlivňují společnost i jedince. Dále analyzuje, jak jsou tyto konstrukty propojené s Joyceovým vyobrazením Gabriela a jaký mají vliv na Gabriela pří jeho finálním "zjevení". Práce by také měla osvětlit, že aspekty "The Dead" nejsou pouhopouhou shodou náhod, která vznikla při jejich tvoření.
