Limit-Point/Limit-Circle problem for Difference Equations

Abstract:

Tématem této rigorózní práce je problém starý více než jedno století. Jedná se o tzv. limit-point/limit-circle problém, na jehož počátku stála práce H. Weyla z roku 1910. Tehdy byla stanovena klasifikace lineárních diferenciálních rovnic 2. řádu na dva typy: limit-circle, jsou-li všechna řešení dané rovnice integrovatelná s druhou mocninou, a limit-point, má-li daná rovnice řešení, které není v druhé mocnině integrovatelné. Tato vlastnost diferenciálních rovnic souvisí s dalšími asymptotickými vlastnostmi jejich řešení, jako je oscilatoričnost, ohraničenost nebo konvergence. V této rigorózní práci studujeme limit-point/limit-circle problém diferenčních rovnic 2. řádu. V úvodních kapitolách nejdříve nastiňujeme dosavadní výsledky týkající se tohoto problému u diferenciálních i diferenčních rovnic. Poté už se zabýváme tímto problémem u Sturm-Liouvilleovy lineární diferenční rovnice 2. řádu, přičemž využíváme ekvivalence této rovnice s rekurentní formulí, potažmo symplektickým systémem. Pro studovanou rovnici uvádíme kriteria jak pro limit-point, tak pro limit-circle. Dále ukazujeme, že ne všechny výsledky ve spojitém případě mají svou obdobu v případě diskrétním. Tyto nesrovnalosti ilustrujeme na několika příkladech. Poslední část práce je věnována limit-point/limit-circle problému u nelineárních diferenčních rovnic 2. řádu. Na základě již zmíněného propojení s jinými asymptotickými vlastnostmi uvádíme několik výsledků s dostatečnými podmínkami pro to, aby studovaná Emden-Fowlerova rovnice byla typu limit-point.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on a problem that is more than one century old. It is the limit-point/limit-circle problem which iniciated in work of H. Weyl from 1910. He classified second order linear differential equation to be of the limit-circle type if all solutions are square integrable, and to be of the limit-point type if there is at least one solution that is not square integrable. This property is in relationship with other asymptotic properties, such as oscillation, boundedness or convergence. In this thesis we study limit-point/limit-circle problem for second order difference equations. In the introductory chapters we present the historical background containing results for both differential and difference equations. Then we deal with limit-point/limit-circle problem for Sturm-Liouville second order difference equation. We use the equivalency among studied equation, recurrence formula and symplectic system and we give both limit-point, and limit-circle criteria. We show that some results in continuous case are not analogous to the results in discrete case. This discrepancy is illustrated by examples. Final chapter is focused on limit-point/limit-circle problem for second order nonlinear difference equations. In context with other asymptotic properties we present some results with sufficient conditions for the Emden-Fowler equation to be of the nonlinear limit-point type.
