Palaeomalacological analysis of calcareous fen sediments of the Holocene age: the effect of volume size, resolution and spatial variability

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá sukcesí měkkýších společenstev na pěnovcovém slatiništi Mituchovci, ležícím na slovenské straně Bílých Karpat poblíž obce Horná Súča (okres Trenčín). Byly získány dvě kopané sondy a dva vrty ze dvou různých odběrových míst, přičemž celkový objem každé ze sond byl přibližně třikrát větší oproti vrtům. Vrstvy jedné sondy byly děleny hrubě, cca po 15 cm, ostatní profily byly členěny po jemných vrstvách o mocnosti 5 cm. Tyto sukcese dokládají vývoj malakocenóz za posledních přibližně 11400 let. To znamená, že prameniště se začalo vyvíjet na přelomu pleistocénu a holocénu, což dovoluje zkoumat dvě obecné hypotézy holocenního vývoje: (1) jestli se v Bílých Karpatech mohla vyskytovat kryptická glaciální refugia lesní malakofauny a (2) zda druhy otevřených stanovišť přežívaly holocenní klimatické optimum na bělokarpatských slatiništích. Třetí okruh otázek se týká vlivu velikosti vzorku, členění vrstev a prostorové variability na paleoekologickou interpretaci. Celkem bylo nalezeno víc než 37 tisíc schránek měkkýšů 78 druhů. Druhově nejbohatší vzorky byly zaznamenány na přelomu starého a středního holocénu (41 druhů na vzorek) a během středověku (39 druhů na vzorek). Na základě změn malakocenóz byly rozpoznány čtyři fáze vývoje slatiniště – od parkové krajiny s otevřenými ploškami a mokřady raného holocénu s boreálními druhy Discus ruderatus a Nesovitrea petronella (11400–9600 BP), přes vlhké a stinné lesy klimatického optima s druhy Vestia turgida a Carychium tridentatum (9600–4400 BP) po sušší a světlejší mladoholocenní lesy s náročným druhem Discus perspectivus (4400–500 BP) a konečně otevřené prameniště (s druhy Vallonia pulchella a Oxyloma elegans) vzniklé cca v 16. století v důsledku valašské kolonizace. Z výsledků lze usuzovat na existenci kryptických refugií lesních měkkýšů v okolí studované lokality. Hypotéza kontinuálního přežívání světlomilných druhů na prameništích nebyla potvrzena. Světlomilné druhy nebyly vůbec zaznamenány po dobu 2 tisíc let v rozvinutých lesních společenstvech středního holocénu až do začátku neolitické kolonizace. Nebyl prokázán signifikantní vliv objemu vzorku na počet zjištěných druhů. Jemnější členění vrstev naopak umožnilo podrobné radiokarbonové datování, a tím i lepší porozumění trendům dynamiky druhů v čase. Odběrová místa se velmi lišila díky jejich rozdílnému stáří, časový překryv sukcese posledního tisíciletí však ukazuje stejný vývoj.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the succession of mollusc assemblages at the Mituchovci spring fen, located in the Slovak part of the White Carpathian Mts (near the village of Horná Súča; Trenčín district). Two dug pits and two cores were taken from two different sampling points, with the total volume of each pit being approximately three times as large as the core volume. One pit was divided into coarser layers, having about 15 cm in thickness; the other profiles were divided into 5 cm thick layers. These successions document the development of mollusc assemblages over the past approximately 11400 years. Hence, the spring fen has been developing since the transition between the Pleistocene and Holocene, which allowed testing two general hypotheses of the Holocene development: (1) whether cryptic glacial refugia of woodland snails existed in the White Carpathians and (2) whether open-landscape species survived the Holocene climatic optimum at the White Carpathian spring fens. The third objective deals with the effect of the volume size, resolution and spatial effect on palaeoecological interpretation. A total number of more than 37 thousand mollusc shells of 78 species were found. The richest assemblages were recorded at the transition between the Early and Middle Holocene (41 species per sample) and during the Middle Ages (39 species per sample). According to changes in snail species composition, a four-phase development of the spring fen was identified: from a park landscape with open patches and wetlands during the Early Holocene with boreal species Discus ruderatus and Nesovitrea petronella (11400–9600 BP), through wet shaded forests with Vestia turgida and Carychium tridentatum of the Climatic optimum (9600–4400 BP), changing to a drier and sparser woodland, with demanding Discus perspectivus of the Late Holocene (4400–500 BP), after that an open spring fen (with Vallonia pulchella and Oxyloma elegans) appeared as the result of the Walachian colonisation. These findings suggest the existence of cryptic refuges for woodland land snails in the surroundings of the studied fen site. The hypothesis of continuous survival of heliophilous species at spring fens was not confirmed. Open-habitat species were not recorded during the Holocene climatic optimum in fully developed forest communities at all during two thousand-year period until Neolithic colonisation. Differences in volume sizes did not have any significant effect on the number of species recorded in fine-layer samples of the pit and core. We found that finer resolution allowed detailed radiocarbon dating and better understanding of trends in species dynamics. The sampling points differed a lot although the overlapping periods of succession in the last millennium coincide well.
