Dutch Disease in Venezuela

Abstract:

Holandská nemoc je nedílnou součástí teorie prokletí přírodních zdrojů. Dle této teorie vykazují země relativně bohaté na nerostné suroviny v dlouhém období nižší tempo ekonomického růstu. Holandská nemoc vysvětluje ekonomické hledisko teorie a její mechanismus funguje následovně. Po expanzi těžebního sektoru dochází v zemi k reálné apreciaci směnného kurzu, který je následovaný růstem reálných mezd. Ty potom zapříčiňují migraci pracovních sil a dochází k růstu zaměstnanosti v sektoru služeb zejména na úkor výrobního sektoru. V zemi tak dochází k de-industrializaci a ekonomika se stává závislou na expandujícím sektoru. Cílem této práce je odhalit přítomnost holandské nemoci ve Venezuele. Ve sledovaném období mezi roky 1998 až 2014 můžeme pozorovat kromě rozporuplných výsledků růstu reálných mezd všechny symptomy holandské nemoci, na jejichž základě jsem potvrdil její přítomnost ve Venezuele.

Abstract:

The Dutch disease is indivisible part of the theory of the resource curse. According to this theory countries rich in mineral resources report in the long run lower pace of economic growth. The Dutch disease explains the economic view of the theory and its mechanism works as follows. After expansion of the mining sector in the country occurs real exchange rate appreciation followed by growth of real wages. These then cause migration of workforce and employment growth occurs in the service sector mostly at the expense of the production sector. The country is thus de-industrialized, and the economy becomes dependent on the expanding sector. The objective of the thesis is to reveal the presence of the Dutch disease in Venezuela. In the observed period between years 1998 and 2014 we can observe except inconsistent results of real wage growth, all symptoms of the Dutch disease, based upon which I confirmed its presence in Venezuela.
