Mystical Experience in the Lab – Sugestibility and the „Dark Therapy“

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto projektu byla replikace experimentálního výzkumu Mystical Experience in the Lab (Aarhus University 2014), přičemž jsem metodologický i teoretický rámec aarhuského experimentu upravila a rozšířila. Výzkumným cílem obou projektů bylo vyvolat v participantech umístěných do kontrolovaného prostředí tzv. mystickou zkušenost (pomocí silně sugestivního kontextu a senzorické deprivace) a zjistit, jak je tato zkušenost ovlivněna jejich sugestibilitou a kulturním rámcem. Sugestivním kontextem experimentu byla tzv. terapie tmou, která podmínky pro senzorickou deprivaci splňuje. Experimentální skupina byla sestavena z příznivců hnutí new age s aktivní zkušeností s duchovní (spirituální) praxí. Hlavním teoretickým rámcem experimentu byla tzv. teorie prediktivního vnímání, která vychází z kognitivní psychologie. Výzkum spojitost mystických zkušeností s vyšší mírou sugestibility participantů i jejich aktivní duchovní praxí prokázal, čímž napomohl ozřejmit způsob, jak tento druh mystických zážitků vzniká i jakým směrem by se mohl odvíjet jejich další výzkum.

Abstract:

The main focus of my project was replication of experimental research Mystical Experience in the Lab (Aarhus University 2014); I have also modified and expanded the metodological and theoretical framework of the Aarhus experiment. The main research goal of both experiments was to induce mystical experiences in participants in controlled environment using highly suggestive context and sensory deprivation. I wanted to find out how mystical experiences are influenced by individual suggestibility and cultural framework. As higly suggestive context I use the „Dark therapy“, which also meets the conditions for sensory deprivation. Experimental group was composed from sympathizers of the New Age movement with active experience with spiritual practices. The main theoretical framework of my experiment was theory of predictive models of perception, which emerges from kognitive psychology. My experimental research has shown a connection between mystical experiences, higher ratings of suggestibility and active spiritual practice of my participants. With this research I hope I helped to understand the way how this kind of mystical experiences was originate and also helped to shown the directions of next researches in this field.
