Parasite diversity of invasive fisch species Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas,1814) in the Danube River basin

Abstract:

Původní a introdukované populace hlaváče černoústého (Neogobius melanostomus), invazního druhu ryby středního a horního toku Dunaje, byly porovnávány z hlediska druhového složení společenstev jeho parazitů, abundance parazitů a kondice ryb. Výzkum byl proveden v letech 2005 a 2006 na Dunaji v Bulharsku (oblast původního rozšíření hlaváče), na Slovensku a v Rakousku (oblasti introdukce hlaváče). Odloveno a parazitologicky vyšetřeno bylo celkem 393 jedinců N. melanostomus. Zaznamenáno bylo celkem 31 druhů mnohobuněčných cizopasníků ze 7 systematických skupin, z toho 12 druhů cizopasníků bylo nalezeno jak v oblasti původního rozšíření, tak v oblastech introdukce hlaváče. Introdukce nového druhu parazita s introdukcí N. melanostomus do nových oblastí na Dunaji však zjištěna nebyla. Introdukované populace N. melanostomus byly naopak infikovány 9-ti druhy parazitů, které nebyly z oblasti původního rozšíření známy. Vyšší druhová diverzita společenstva parazitů byla zjištěna u introdukovaných populací hlaváče. Rozdíl v abundanci parazitů mezi původní populací a introdukovanými populacemi nebyl u většiny testovaných skupin ryb zjištěn. Porovnáním hodnot kondičních indexů mezi populacemi bylo zjištěno, že hlaváči jsou v oblasti introdukce v lepší kondici než v oblasti původního rozšíření. Mezi hodnotami kondičních indexů a abundancí parazitů však nebyl zjištěn významný vztah. Úspěšné šíření N. melanostomus v novém prostředí mohlo být podpořeno lepší kondicí hlaváčů v tomto prostředí, přičemž lepší kondice těchto ryb však pravděpodobně nesouvisí s parazitismem.

Abstract:

Comparison of parasite diversity, parasite abundance and host condition status of round goby Neogobius melanostomus, the invasive fish species of Middle and Upper Danube River, was made between its native population and introduced populations. Research was carried out in native area of goby distribution (Danube in Bulgaria) and in areas of its introduction (Danube in Slovakia and Austria) in 2005 and 2006. A total of 393 specimens of round goby was collected and examined for the presence of metazoan parasites. In the longitudinal profile of the Danube River, a total of 31 species of metazoan parasites belonging to 7 taxonomic groups were found in round goby. Presence of 12 parasite species was recorded in the native area of goby distribution as well as in the areas of introduction. Nevertheless, introduction of parasite species non-native for the Slovak and Austrian sections of the Danube River together with round goby was not observed. Instead, introduced round goby populations have been infected with 9 new parasite species that are not known in its native population. Species diversity was higher in parasite community of the introduced goby populations compared to parasite community of native goby population. Parasite abundance was not significantly different between native goby population and its introduced populations in most fish groups tested. Comparison of values of condition indices revealed better condition status of round goby in the areas of its introduction compared to the native area of its distribution, but no relationship between condition indices values and parasite abundance was observed. Therefore, parasitism is not considered to be a significant factor affecting better condition status and expansion of round goby in its non-native area of distribution.
