Mirrors for Princes in Byzantium: Advisory Literature of the Komnenian Period

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce je věnována dvěma na sebe navazujícím otázkám spojeným s byzantskou literaturou. První problematiku tvoří analýza korpusu byzantských poradních textů určených mladému urozenému muži, tradičně sdružovaných do žánrové kategorie knížecích zrcadel, dále pak vytýčení racionálnějších taxonomických kritérii pro ustavení skupiny takovýchto spisů a následně aplikace těchto kritérií vedoucí k sestavení korpusu textů vztahujících se k vládě Alexia I. a Ioanna II. Komnenů a obsahujících rady pro správnou vládu či obraz ideálního panovníka. Druhým úkolem je pak po pečlivé analýze každého díla tohoto korpusu s přihlédnutím k jeho literární formě, obsahu, účelu vzniku, vztahu mezi autorem a příjemcem i historického pozadí při jeho sepsání detekovat změny v obrazu ideálního panovníka v literárních pramenech z doby vlády prvních dvou komnenovských císařů.

Abstract:

The presented thesis explores two issues related to Byzantine literature. The first is the application of the genre term Mirrors for Princes to denote highly elaborated Byzantine advisory works addressed to noble young men. It is proposed that the application of this term makes little sense in the Byzantine context and that more reasonable taxonomic criteria are required to define this group of writings. In the light of these investigations, a corpus of texts is created relating to the reigns of Alexios I Komnenos and John II Komnenos and containing instructions for, or depictions of the conduct of an ideal ruler. Then, using this corpus, the second issue – namely, the depiction of an ideal ruler – is explored. Each writing of the corpus is carefully investigated with respect to its literary form, style, content, purpose, relationship between writer and recipient, and historical background, and changes in the portrayal of an ideal ruler in the Komnenian period are depicted.
