Vrouwland: From Morocco via Belgium to the Czech Republic. Translation of Moroccan cultural elements in the Belgian roman Woman Country

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá překladem marockých a belgických kulturně specifických elementů v románu Vrouwland (Země žen) od Rachidy Lamrabet, belgické spisovatelky s marockými kořeny. Práce se skládá z praktické a teoretické části. V teoretické části se zabývám kontextem díla, prostředím, v kterém se román odehrává, a představuji knihu i autorku. V praktické části pak analyzuji originál, rozebírám svůj překlad kulturně specifických elementů z první části románu a osvětluji zvolené překladatelské přístupy a strategie.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the translation of Moroccan and Belgian culture specific elements in the novel Vrouwland (Women’s country) by Rachida Lamrabet, a Belgian writer with Moroccan roots. The thesis consists of a practical and a theoretical part. In the theoretical part, I discuss the context of the work, the setting in which the novel takes place, and introduce the book and the author. In the practical part, I then analyse the original, discuss my translation of the culturally specific elements in the first partof the novel and explain the chosen translation approaches and strategies.
