The Environmental Implications of Emily Dickinson's Poetry: Dickinson's Mental Travelling

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá ekokritickou analýzou tvorby Emily Dickinson a primárně se soustředí na básně, jež zachycují velmi odlišné přírodní prostředí. Cílem této práce je představit Emily Dickinson jako umělkyni, která svým svérázným způsobem porozuměla propojenosti všech věcí na Zemi a dokázala to zachytit ve svých básních. Tyto básně jsou primárně ty, jež znázorňují místa, která jsou jí blízká, ale i velmi vzdálená. Představuji termín „mental travelling“, neboť Emily Dickinson za svého života téměř vůbec necestovala. Dále dokládám, že právě toto jedinečné chápání světa v sobě nese hluboké ekologické povědomí a spojuji její tvorbu se současným ekologickým hnutím pod názvem „bioregionalism“. První kapitola se zabývá samotářským životem Emily Dickinson a dokazuje tak, jak jsou motivy zabývající se cizími místy ve světě v její tvorbě poměrně nečekané. Druhá kapitola se zaobírá nesčetnými motivy cizích míst, jež se objevují v její tvorbě a také její zálibou ve vědních oborech. Na závěr tato práce představuje asociace mezi tvorbou Emily Dickinson a hnutím „bioregionalism“ a tím naznačuje relevantnost její tvorby ve 21. století.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the ecocritical analysis of the poetry of Emily Dickinson and primarily focuses on poems depicting divergent environments. The aim of the thesis is to present Dickinson as someone who deeply understood the interconnectedness of all things, an idiosyncratic perception of the world that she was able to capture in her poems. These poems are chiefly the ones that are portraying places both local and global. Thus, I postulate the idea of “mental travelling” since Dickinson did not physically travel during her life. I argue that Dickinson’s comprehension of the world is infused with profound environmental awareness while linking her poetry with contemporary environmental movement called Bioregionalism. The first chapter introduces Dickinson’s private life and showing the unexpectedness of the images of the foreign that are so frequent in her poetry. Furthermore, this chapter laid down the foundations for the idea of “mental travelling”. The second chapter deals with ubiquitous images of foreign places, Dickinson’s interest in sciences, and the ability to travel through the faculties of her mind. Lastly, the thesis presents the association between the selected poetry of Dickinson and Bioregionalism, suggesting that her poetry have relevance even for us today
