The Use of Smartphones for Informal Learning Outside the Classroom

Abstract:

Tento dokument se zabývá používáním mobilních aplikací a neformálním způsobem učení studentů EFL mimo třídu. Všudypřítomnost chytrých telefonů nabízí možnosti používat chytré telefony a mobilní aplikace pro formální a neformální studium jazyků. Přestože jsou studenti technicky vyspělí, pokyny učitele, jak používat tyto mobilní aplikace, jsou stále nezbytné a studenti je chtějí. Studenti EFL nemají mnoho příležitostí dále praktikovat jazyk, když jsou mimo třídu, a dokonce i mobilní aplikace, které jim učitel představil, mají své nedostatky a omezení pro neformální učení. Studenti jsou tak nuceni vytvořit si vlastní učební prostory, aby měli možnost setkat se s anglickým jazykem a pokračovat ve svém učení. Ačkoli neexistuje plynulý přechod z formálního do neformálního jazykového učení, zavedení a správné používání chytrých telefonů ve třídách by mohlo umožnit snadnější přechod mezi dvěma vzdělávacími prostředími a lepší samoregulované vzdělávací prostředí vytvořené samými studenty.

Abstract:

This paper looks at the use of mobile applications, and the informal learning of EFL students outside the classroom. The inescapable presence of smartphones offers itself to the possibility to use the smartphones and the mobile applications for formal and informal language learning. Although the students are technically advanced, the teacher’s guidance on how to use these mobile applications is still necessary and wanted by the students. Yet, when outside the formal classroom environment, the EFL students do not have much opportunity to further practice the language, and even the mobile applications introduced to them by the teacher have their shortcomings and limitations for the informal learning. Thus, the students are forced to create their own learning spaces to have the opportunity to encounter the English language and continue with their learning. Although there is no fluid crossover from the formal into the informal language learning, the introduction and the proper use of the smartphone in the classrooms could allow for smoothing the borders between two learning environments and for better self-regulated learning environments created by the students themselves.
