The Importance of Outward Appearances: A Transvaluation in Selected Works of Oscar Wilde

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je popis a analýza přehodnocení hodnot ve vybraných dílech irského básníka a dramatika Oscara Wildea. Tento systém přehodnocování hodnot slouží jako způsob kritiky pokrytecké viktoriánské společnosti, ve které Oscar Wilde žil. Jeho díla, která tato práce rozebírá, jsou následující: Obraz Doriana Graye, Salome, Ideální manžel a Jak je důležité míti Filipa. Přehodnocení hodnot, ke kterému v těchto dílech dochází, je úzce spojeno s dichotomií mezi vnějším vzhledem a (vnitřní) lidskou povahou postav, která jsou v rámci vybraných děl v této práci analyzovány. Hodnoty, u kterých dochází k přehodnocení, jsou především ty, jež jsou většinou spojované s pozitivními asociacemi a především s morální čistotou – jedná se o krásu, světlo, váženost a upřímnost. Asociace těchto hodnot jsou posléze převráceny ve vlastní protiklady a z hodnot se tak stávají symboly morálního úpadku a zkaženosti. Krása a světlo proto už nadále nejsou asociovány s morální čistotou, ale s hříchem a zkažeností, jak je ilustrováno v Obrazu Doriana Graye a v Salome. Váženost a upřímnost vyobrazené v Ideálním manželovi a ve hře Jak je důležité míti Filipa už v očích společnosti nemají žádný význam, pokud nejsou doprovázeny dokonalou přetvářkou. Styl je přednější než upřímnost, způsoby jsou důležitější než morální zásady.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine a transvaluation of values in selected works of the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde. This transvaluation serves to express a criticism of the hypocritical Victorian society. The selected works that are examined are The Picture of Dorian Gray, Salome, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest. The transvaluation of values is connected to the dichotomy between outward appearances and inner nature of the analysed characters of the works under discussion. Values that are thus transvaluated are those that are usually credited with positive associations and with moral purity – beauty, light, respectability, and earnestness. Associations of these qualities are then subverted into their polar opposites, and so the qualities become symbols of moral corruption. Therefore, beauty and light are no longer the associated with purity, but with sin and corruption as is illustrated in The Picture od Dorian Gray and Salome. Respectability and earnestness depicted in An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest – meaning true respectability and earnestness that originate in the heart and are not mere disguises – do not mean anything anymore in the eyes of the society, unless they are accompanied by an outward pretence. Style precedes sincerity, manners are more important than morals.
