Literary Reflections of the Risorgimento in Southern Writings

Abstract:

The present master’s diploma thesis deals with the social aspect of the Risorgimento, focusing on southern Italy (and especially Sicily). Based on five literary works – Libertà by Giovanni Verga, I Viceré by Federico de Roberto, Signora Ava by Francesco Jovine, Il Gattopardo by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, and Il quarantotto by Leonardo Sciascia – the thesis will look into the changes that occurred in the society of southern Italy at the time of the unification of Italy, as well as into the attitude of various social classes (aristocracy, bourgeoisie, and the people) to the historical and social changes. The diploma thesis analyses the depiction of the problems of southern Italy in the newly united state by the various authors.

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá sociální stránkou Risorgimenta, se zaměřením na jih Itálie (především na Sicílii). Na základě pěti literárních děl – Giovanni Verga: Libertà; Federico De Roberto: I Viceré; Francesco Jovine: Signora Ava; Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa: Il Gattopardo; Leonardo Sciascia: Il quarantotto – je zkoumáno, jaké změny proběhly v jihoitalské společnosti v době sjednocení Itálie a jaký byl postoj různých sociálních vrstev (jak aristokracie, tak buržoazie nebo lidu) k historickým a sociálním změnám. V diplomové práci je rozebíráno, jak různí autoři znázorňují problémy italského Jihu v novém sjednoceném státu.
