The Influence of Japanese Aesthetics on Fashion Illustration of the Magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá vliv tradiční japonské estetiky na módní ilustraci magazínu La Gazette du Bon Ton. Práce vychází z předpokladu, že japonský vliv, jenž se projevil ve většině uměleckých odvětví druhé poloviny devatenáctého století, se promítl také v oblasti módní ilustrace. Tento vliv je zkoumán v díle hlavních ilustrátorů jednoho z nejvýznamnějších časopisů módní ilustrace - francouzského magazínu La Gazette du Bon Ton. Práce se pokusí zodpovědět otázky: V jakých konkrétních oblastech ovlivnila japonská estetika módní ilustraci v magazínu La Gazette du Bon Ton? V dílech kterých ilustrátorů můžeme tento vliv vysledovat nejvíce? Otázky budou zodpovězeny hledáním paralel mezi jednotlivými ilustracemi magazínu La Gazette du Bon Ton od autorů: George Barbier, Georges Lepape, Javier José, André Marty a třiceti reprezentativními dřevořezy japonských umělců školy Ukijoe: Katsushika Hokusai, Andó Hiroshige a Kitagawa Utamaro. Primární teze bude řešena empiricko – analytickou metodou podpořenou komparací výše zmíněných děl. V uměleckém projevu budou srovnávány zvolené náměty, kompozice, techniky malby a techniky tisku a ty budou demonstrovány v obsáhlé obrazové příloze.

Abstract:

This thesis aims at analyzing the influence of Japanese aesthetics on fashion illustration of the French magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton. The research focuses on answering following questions: In what fields did Japanese aesthetics influence the fashion illustration of the magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton? In the work of which illustrators can this influence be tracked on the largest degree? Answers will be based on a comparison of thirty representative Japanese prints mostly by Katsushika Hokusai, Andó Hiroshige and Kitagawa Utamaro and La Gazette du Bon Ton fashion plates by George Barbier, Georges Lepape, Javier José and André Marty. The method chosen for this research combines empirical and analytic approach and is supported by a comparison of above mentioned works of art. In order to fulfill the main thesis and bring evidence of mutual similarities, analysis will above all consider following elements: theme, composition, artistic and printing techniques.
