Mineral wealth as a barrier of democracy?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje vztahu mezi ekonomickou výkonností státu a povahou jeho režimu. Práce si klade za cíl objasnit, zda ropné bohatství vede k demokracii nebo ji naopak brání. Teoretická část se zabývá korelací bohatstvím ve vztahu k demokracii, teorií rentiérského státu a vysvětlením základních pojmů souvisejících s daným tématem. Druhá část této práce se zabývá komparací Spojených arabských emirátů a Norska. Na základě ekonomických a sociálních ukazatelů je porovnáván ekonomický a sociální rozvoj obou zemí. Tato část práce se dále zabývá tím, zda jsou zkoumané státy rentiérské či nikoliv a zkoumá jaký vliv má tato skutečnost na povahu státu.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the relationship between economic performance of the state and the nature of his regime. The work aims to clarify whether the oil wealth leads to democracy or hinder it. The theoretical part deals with the correlation of wealth in relation to democracy, theory of rentier state and the explanation of basic concept related to the topic. The second part of this work implicates the comparison of United Arab Emirates and Norway. The basic economic and social indicators are used to compare the social and economic development in both countries. This part also deals with the fact if the surveyed states are rentiers or not and examines the impact on the nature of the state.
