Japan in the First Czech Travelogues

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na první české cestopisy o Japonsku z 2. poloviny 19. století, které svým jedinečným obsahem představují žitou zkušenost autorů a umožňují tak i dnešnímu čtenáři nahlédnout do tehdejšího vnímání Japonska. Jejich rozborem se zkoumají tehdy prezentované charakteristiky Japonska a jeho obyvatel, čímž se ozřejmuje dobový obraz (představa) Japonska v tehdejší české společnosti. Práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní kapitoly, ze kterých první se zaobírá společenským a profesním pozadím autorů cestopisů (původ, účely cest). Jedná se konkrétně o Alexandra Hübnera, Annu Brasseyovou a Josefa Kořenského. Druhá kapitola je rozdělena na podkapitoly podle autorů a pokouší se znovu formulovat tehdejší obraz Japonska, který mohl čtenář mít po přečtení zkoumaných cestopisů. Zaměřuje se na jeho podobu, vývoj a také na to, zda Japonsko v očích Západu bylo definováno spíše jako země barbarská nebo civilizovaná.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the first Czech travelogues about Japan from the second half of the 19th century, which, with their unique content, represent the lived experience of the authors and thus allow today's reader to gain insight into the period perception of Japan. By analysing them, the characteristics of Japan and its inhabitants presented at that time are examined, thus clarifying the image (idea) of Japan in Czech society at that time. The thesis is divided into two main chapters, the first deals with the social and professional background of the authors of the travelogues (their origin, purposes of the trips). These are specifically Alexander Hübner, Annie Brassey and Josef Kořenský. The second chapter is divided into subchapters by author and attempts to restate the period image of Japan that the reader may have had after reading the reviewed travelogues. It focuses on its appearance, development, and whether Japan was defined in the eyes of the West as more of a barbaric or civilised country.
