A Woman in Traditional Culture. A Sociological Probe into the Transmission of Tradition of Folk Costume Wearing in a Gendered Line.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá tradicí lidového oděvu v oblasti jihovýchodní Moravy, v obcích Strážnice, Radějov a Petrov, kde se vyskytuje stejný typ lidového oděvu. Ve vybraných obcích byl veden šestiletý výzkum a dokumentovány poslední nositelky lidového oděvu. Výzkum detailně zachycuje narativní vzpomínky nositelek lidového oděvu a pamětnic v daných lokalitách, přičemž získané informace jsou vzácné kvůli neopakovatelnosti výzkumu v lokalitě. Text obsahuje životopisné medailony nositelek a přesné zachycení vzpomínkového vyprávění podle témat. Práce je členěna do tří sfér – intimní (sexualita, porody, menstruace), polo-veřejná a veřejná (vzdělávání, zaměstnání, rodina atp.) Práce zachycuje také pokračování tradice lidového oděvu v současných formách, jako je rodinné předávání tradice, souborová činnost a udržování v rámci církevních příležitostí a uvádí jednotlivé případové studie. Závěrem text analyzuje kontinuitu tradice lidového oděvu na základě teorie F. G. Baileyho a zaznamenává vývoj tradice až do současnosti.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with traditional folk costumes of the South Moravia region originating from the municipalities of Strážnice, Radějov and Petrov, where the traditionally locally worn folk costumes share great similarities to each other. An intensive, six-year long research has been conducted in the selected municipalities to document the last living female wearers of folk costumes. The text resulting from the research contains detailed narrative memories of the women as well as other locals, who still remember the local traditions as they used to be widely practiced. The research presented in the dissertation is no longer feasible due to the advanced age of the participants, which makes the obtained information very valuable. In addition to the memories discussed in detail in connection to different aspects of living in the traditional society, biographical profiles of the women are also included. The paper is divided into three areas according to the part of life it deals with: The intimate sphere (sexuality, childbirth, menstruation), the semi-public sphere and the public sphere (education, employment, family, etc..). Special attention is paid to documentation of the dynamics of continuity of the tradition of folk costume wearing in contemporary forms such as the transmission of family traditions, activities of folklore groups and of the church including individual case studies of these phenomena. Finally, the text analyzes the continuity of traditional folk costumes wearing based on the theory of F. G. Bailey in order to capture the evolution of tradition in the modern times.
