The Myth of the Old South: the depiction/interpretation of American History in High School Textbooks

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of the Civil War in the United States of America taking place in the 19th century. The work describes main causes of the Civil War, its course until the end of the Reconstruction era and the politics of the then President Abraham Lincoln. An inseparable part of the diploma thesis is the interpretation of the Civil Was in chosen American high school history textbooks which are subsequently compared with depiction of the war in chosen Czech high school history textbooks.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem Občanské války ve Spojených Státech Amerických v 19. století. Práce zmiňuje hlavní důvody války, její průběh až do konce období Rekonstrukce a politikou tehdejšího prezidenta Abrahama Lincolna. Nedílnou součástí práce je interpretace Občanské války v amerických středoškolských učebnicích historie, které jsou následně porovnány s interpretací války v českých středoškolských učebnicích dějepisu.
