The poetics of space in Czech imaginative prose at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá poetikou prostorů města (ulice, příbytky a sakrální stavby) v prózách Miloše Urbana, Michala Ajvaze, Jáchyma Topola, Jiřího Kratochvila a Daniely Hodrové vydaných v letech 1990-2008. Po literárněteoretické stránce se v práci vychází z pojetí prostoru města tartuskou školou a Danielou Hodrovou, kdy jsou sledovány základní znaky, jimiž jmenovaní autoři charakterizují prostory města. Ačkoliv autoři využívají různé prostředky charakterizace, jednotlivé prostory města společně vnímají jako součást paměti celého města, kterou postavy svým konáním oživují. Urban prezentuje ulice jako přirozeně vzniklé prostory, ačkoliv se jedná o plánovitě vzniklá místa. Ajvaz představuje ulice buď jako místa, jímž se pohybují bytosti ze světa reálného i toho fantaskního. Pro Topola jsou ulice místem všedního dne, které se postavám jeví fantaskní v důsledku dezorientace v prvních letech polistopadové společnosti. Kratochvilovi jsou ulice nebezpečnými místy v důsledku neustálého dohledu totalitní mocí. Pro Hodrovou jsou ulice prostory, jimiž bloudí postavy ze světa živých i mrtvých a snaží se vyrovnat se svým hříchem z minulosti. Podobně tito autoři prezentují i příbytky. Urban je charakterizuje jako labyrinty nebo existenciální vězení. Ajvaz odhaluje jejich tajemná zákoutí nebo mu jsou místy, která posunují jeho postavy v odhalování smyslu nějakého tajemného symbolu. Topol s Kratochvilem zobrazují příbytky jako místa, v nichž postavy ztratily poslední zbytky svobody a bezpečí. Hodrová podobně jako u ulic představuje příbytky jako místa, v nichž se setkávají bytosti ze světa živých i mrtvých. V případě sakrálních staveb jsou ty nejvýraznější v Urbanových románech a jedné z Kratochvílových próz. Oba autoři je vnímají jako iniciační místa, v nichž postavy a spolu s nimi i čtenář podstupují iniciační cestu k odhalení paměti města. Společné pro jmenované autory je, že ve svých dílech mytologizují prostory měst, když jejich reálně známý atribut přepisují jiným. Všichni prezentují dílčí prostory města jako labyrinty a texty, jimiž může člověk procházet a svou chůzí je číst, což jej podněcuje k myšlenkám o tom, jestli svět se mu jeví ve své skutečnosti nebo zastírá zcela jinou svou podstatu. Protože i tartuská škola spolu s Hodrovou definovali městský text jako soubor děl vykazující právě tyto komplexnější atributy, lze i v případě próz zde zmiňované pětice českých autorů hovořit o jednotném městském textu, v případě děl o Praze jako pražském textu.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis deals with the poetics of city spaces (streets, homes and sacral buildings) in works of prose by Miloš Urban, Michal Ajvaz, Jáchym Topol, Jiří Kratochvil and Daniela Hodrová published between the years 1990 and 2008. Through a literary method, this thesis stems from the poetics of city spaces of the Tartu school and Daniela Hodrová works about basic features used by aforementioned authors to characterize city spaces. Although the authors use various features of characterization, each of them finds city spaces as a part of city memory which is revived by the actions of characters. Urban presents artificially created streets as naturally arising spaces. Ajvaz presents the streets as places where characters from both real and fantasy worlds walk. Topol perceives the streets as the setting for everyday life, which seems fantastical for the characters because of their disorientation in the first years after 1989 (the Velvet revolution). Kratochvil presents the streets as dangerous places due to the ongoing supervision of totalitarian power. For Hodrová the streets are places where the characters from the world of living and dead wander and try to reconcile with their sins from the past. Similarly, these authors also present dwellings (houses, flats, rooms). Urban characterizes the dwellings as labyrinths or existential prisons. Ajvaz reveals mysterious corners of the dwellings or describes the dwellings as the places pushing the characters to uncover the meaning of any mysterious symbol. Topol and Kratochvil show dwellings as places where characters have lost the last remnants of freedom and security. As in the streets so too here Hodrová characterizes the dwelling as the meeting place of the characters from the world of the living and the dead. Regarding the sacral buildings they are most significant in Urban's novels and one of Kratochvil´s works of prose. Both authors see the sacral buildings as initiation places where the characters as well as the reader undergo an initiatory journey to uncover the memory of the city. Common to the mentioned authors is that in overwriting the characteristics of the cities with different characteristics they mythologize city spaces. The authors present the streets, dwellings, and sacral buildings as labyrinths and texts where the characters as well as the readers can walk and read the texts which encourage them to explore thoughts about whether the world appears in its reality or conceals a completely different nature. Because the Tartu school and Hodrová have defined an urban text as a collection of works containing these complex attributes, the prose of the the above mentioned authors can be perceived as one urban text or, in the case of works of Prague, as one Prague text.
