The relationship between life course, generativity and personality traits

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi průběhem životní dráhy, generativitou a rysy osobnosti. V první části práce se věnujeme konceptu generativity, pokračujeme vymezením celoživotního vývoje a problematiky rysů osobnosti, jimiž se dále společně s charakteristikami životní dráhy zabýváme v souvislosti s generativitou. Ke konci teoretické části rozebíráme i dosavadní výsledky Brněnského výzkumu, jelikož empirickou část práce uskutečňujeme na výzkumném souboru účastníků Brněnského longitudinálního výzkumu celoživotního vývoje (N=77). Na tomto souboru se zaměříme na doposud neprověřené vazby generativity v jejích dimenzích generativního zájmu, generativního jednání a osobního příběhu vůči charakteristikám životní dráhy reprezentovanými vzděláním, stabilitou partnerství, partnerským statusem, stabilitou kariéry a rodičovstvím či bezdětností. Současně se snažíme zjistit, zda charakteristiky životní dráhy přispívají ke generativitě nad rámec rysů osobnosti zastoupených pětifaktorovým modelem osobnosti. Výsledky ukazují, že prediktorem generativního jednání je rodičovství charakterizované 3 a více potomky. Osobní příběh je predikován také rodičovstvím, ale kromě 3 a více potomků nalezneme statisticky významný výsledek také u rodičů, kteří mají 1–2 děti. Dále zjišťujeme, že z rysů osobnosti jsou nejvýznamnějšími prediktory generativního zájmu a generativního jednání rysy extraverze a otevřenost vůči zkušenosti, u osobního příběhu se jedná jen o extraverzi. Z charakteristik životní dráhy při kontrole rysů osobnosti je prediktorem generativity, a to jen v dimenzi generativního jednání, vysokoškolské vzdělání.

Abstract:

The focus of the thesis has been a relation between life course, generativity and personality traits. In the first part of the thesis we deal with a concept of generativity, continue with a definition of the lifespan development and problems of personality traits which we investigat together with characteristic features of the life course in context with generativity. At the end of the theoretical part we also investigate actual results of the research in Brno because the empirical part of the thesis is based on the test group of participants in the longitudinal research of lifespan development in Brno (N = 77). That test group is focused on not so far proven links of generativity in its dimensions of generative concern, behaviour and personal story towards characteristics of life course represented by education, partnership stability, partnership status, stability of career and parenthood or childlessness. At the same time we try to find out whether the characteristic features of the life course contribute to generativity beyond personality traits represented by a five-factor model of personality. The results have shown that the predictor of generative behaviour was parenthood with three or more children. The personal story has been also predicted by parenthood. However, besides three and more children we found a statistically significant result for parents with one or two kids. We figured out that the most important predictors of generative concern and behaviour among personality traits are extraversion and openness to experience and as for personal story it was only extraversion. Regarding the characteristics of life course while controlling personality traits the predictor of generativity, and only in dimension of the generative behaviour, is the college degree.
