Risk factors of adolescent substance use: moderation effect of identity styles

Abstract:

Tématem výzkumu jsou rizikové faktory užívání návykových látek a styly sebedefinování jako možný moderátor jejich vztahu. Cílem výzkumu je ověřit u adolescentů souvislost mezi vnímanou zátěží a mírou užívání návykových látek a mezi emočním klimatem v rodině a mírou užívání návykových látek. Dále je cílem výzkumu objasnit roli stylů sebedefinování v problematice užívání návykových látek u adolescentů ověřením moderační hypotézy, že styly identity moderují vztah mezi zmiňovanými rizikovými faktory a mírou užívání návykových látek. Výzkum vychází z předpokladu, že užívání návykových látek v kontextu informačního stylu sebedefinování, není spojeno tak silně s rizikovými faktory jako je tomu u zbývajících stylů. Bylo zjištěno, že styly sebedefinování mají určitý vliv na užívání návykových látek. Skupina s převažujícím difuzně/vyhýbavým stylem sebedefinování vykazovala ve větší míře užívání návykových látek, než zbývající skupiny. Nebyl však prokázán moderační efekt stylů sebedefinování na sílu vztahu mezi užíváním návykových látek a vybranými rizikovými faktory. Byl potvrzen vztah mezi vnímanou zátěží a mírou užívání návykových látek a mezi volností poskytovanou matkou a mírou užívání návykových látek. Ti adolescenti, kteří vnímali vyšší zátěž v různých oblastech, užívali také více návykových látek. Vyšší volnost poskytovaná matkou vedla také k vyššímu užívání návykových látek. Studie si všímá i limitů výzkumu a možných implikací pro praxi.

Abstract:

The topics of this thesis are risk factors of experimental substance use among adolescents and identity styles as possible moderators of their association. The aim of the research is to verify the association between the experimental substance use and the perceived stress and between the experimental substance use and emotional family climate. The next aim is to clarify the role of the identity styles in experimental substance use among adolescents by verifying the moderation hypothesis, that identity styles moderate the association between the risk factors and substance use. This study is based on the assumption that substance use in the context of informational identity style is not so tightly associated with the risk factors as in the context of the two other styles. It was found that the identity styles had some effect on the experimental substance use. Respondents with diffuse/avoidant identity style demonstrated higher rate of substance use in comparison with the other identity styles. However, the moderation hypothesis was not confirmed. It was confirmed that there is a significant association between the perceived stress and the substance use and between the liberty offered by mother and the substance use. The adolescents with the higher rate of perceived stress tended to score higher in the substance use as well. Higher rate of liberty offered by mother was associated with higher rate of substance use. The study is also considering the limits of the research and implications for future research and practice.
