LGBT community and the stories of "doing sexual difference" in The Simpsons

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zobrazováním homosexuality a členů LGBT komunity v seriálu Simpsonovi. V teoretické části je seriál představen a uveden do kontextu televizní tvorby, jsou popsány důvody pro jeho postmoderní zařazení a dopady jeho překladu a dabingu. Zároveň je uvedeno pojetí (homo)sexuality jako sociálního konstruktu a jsou popsány mechanismy heteronormativity vymezující a udržující heterosexualitu jako předpokládanou a privilegovanou podobu sexuálních projevů. Prostřednictvím naratologické analýzy jsou pak zkoumány dvě epizody s LGBT dějovou linií, nejaktuálnější a nejstarší. Použité metody berou kromě kategorií „narativní gramatiky“ v úvahu také komické prvky, serialitu, hledisko a binární opozice v seriálu. Výsledky ukazují na homogenizaci a stereotypizaci reprezentací členů sexuálních minorit, na rozvolňování i udržování polarizace heterosexuality a homosexuality (heterosexualita zůstává normou, ale současné je odsuzováno pojetí homosexuality jako „nenormální“), na převažující objektivizaci členů minorit, ale zároveň i počátky jejich subjektivizace, a na reflexi sociální konstrukce genderu a vymezené sexuality, ačkoli je sexuální orientace zároveň prezentována jako stabilní a neměnná.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with depictions of homosexuality and members of LGBT community in the tv series The Simpsons. The series are decribed and introduced to the context of other television production in the theoretical part, where I also describe the reasons for its postmodern classification and the impact of its translation and dubbing. Follows the introduction of (homo)sexuality as social construct and destription of mechanics of hereronormativity, that define and maintain heterosexuality as the presumed and privileged form of sexual expression. Two episodes with LGBT related storyline, the oldest and newest, are then examined via the naratological analysis. Utilized methods consider the categories of „narrative grammar“ as well as the comical elements, seriality, viewpoint and binary oppositions in the series. The results show homogenization and stereotypization of depictions of members of sexual minorities, both loosening and consolidating of polarization of heterosexuality and homosexuality (heterosexuality is still a norm, but simultaneously the approach to homosexuality as to something „abnormal“ is condemned), prevailing objectification of members of minorities, but also beginnings of their subjectivisation, and the reflection of social construction of gender and defined sexuality, although the sexual orientation is also presented as stable and unchangeable.
