Bertrand Russell and his Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá prací Bertranda Russella, významnou filozofickou postavou 20. století, úvodem do matematické filozofie a velkým přínosem nových matematických poznatků 20. století. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena na dvě části. První kratší část se zabývá samotným autorem, detailním popisem některých jeho důležitých životních událostí a mnoho poznatků a postav, které ho ovlivnili v jeho kariéře. Druhá část bakalářské práce je zaměřena na knihu Úvod do matematické filozofie, kterou sepsal jako jaké si shrnutí jeho veledíla Principia Mathematica. Obsahuje volný překlad první části této knihy, která byla napsána v anglickém jazyce, a zabývá se konečnými množinami čísel. Dále obsahuje několik vlastních komentářů k daným tématům, ale také doslovné překlady a definice ze samotné knihy. Překlad je ukončen stručnou diskuzí o nekonečných množinách. Cílem práce je seznámit čtenáře s filozofickými myšlenkami v matematice a zpřístupnit jim tak nové znalosti a obzory v matematice.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with the work of Bertrand Russell, one of the most important philosophical character of the 20th century, further with the introduction to mathematical philosophy and his great merit of new mathematical knowledge of 20th century. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first shorter part deals with Russell himself, with detailed description of his life and with some important life experience and figures, which influenced his carrier. Second part is focused on the book called Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy, which Russell wrote as a semi-popular version of his and Whitehead’s masterpiece Principia Mathematica. The part contains loose translation of the first part of the book, which was written in English, and it deals with finite sets of numbers. The text contains some of my own commentaries directly made towards the subject and also literal translations of the mathematical definitions. The translation is finished with a discussion of the infinite sets of numbers, which are the main topic of the second part of the book. The main aim of the thesis is to acquaint the reader with philosophical ideas in mathematics and thus give them access to the new knowledge and perspective in mathematics.
