Wordscores. A Novel Approach to Extracting Information from Political Texts

Abstract:

Wordscores je inovativní přístup k počítačem prováděné analýze politických textů. Jedná se o automatizovanou metodu obsahové analýzy. Hlavním rysem wordscoru je to, že se slovy zachází jako s daty a následně připisuje číselné hodnocení jednotlivým dokumentům, které jsou předmětem zkoumání. Wordscores využívá apriorní vstupní data a sadu referenčních dokumentů k usuzování na relativní ideologickou pozici zkoumaných textů. Záměrem této práce je v českém prostředí představit novou, na jazyku nezávislou a univerzální metodu obsahové analýzy textů a kriticky shrnout limitace tohoto přístupu. Je nezbytné popsat, jak wordscores pracuje, co přináší politické vědě a jaké jsou problematické rysy této metody. Také je třeba představit modifikace této statistické procedury. Tento popis bude proveden v několika krocích. Prvním krokem je popis teoretického pozadí metody wordscores, zejména paradigma politického prostoru. Zadruhé, bude následovat přehled současných metod obsahové analýzy. Třetím bodem bude popis jednotlivých kroků při hodnocení slov a dokumentů. Za čtvrté budou představeny empirické výsledky wordscoru ve vybraných případech. Následovat bude srovnání dvou hlavních metod obsahové analýzy volebních programů politických stran. Nakonec budou možnosti wordscoru demonstrovány na volebních programech českých politických stran.

Abstract:

Wordscores is a novel approach to the computerized textual analysis of political texts. It is an automated method of content analysis. The main feature of the wordscores procedure is treating words as data and consequently assigning numerical scores to the documents under investigation. Wordscores use an a priori input data and a set of reference documents to produce estimates of the relative ideological position of the so called “virgin” texts. The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel “language blind” and universal method of textual analysis to Czech audience and critically sum up the limitations of this approach. It is necessary to describe how wordscores works, how it contributes to political science and which are the troubling features of this method. Also to present some modifications of this statistical procedure. It will be done in few steps. The first step is to characterize the theoretical background of wordscores – mainly the political space paradigm. Secondly, we list the contemporaneous textual analysis methods. Thirdly, we describe step by step the word scoring procedure and generating document estimates. Fourthly, we present the empirical results of wordscores in several cases. Fifthly the two main textual analysis methods of party manifestos are compared. Lastly, the wordscores is applied to the manifestos of Czech political parties.
