Web accessibility standards

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the testing of bank web pages accessibility for disabled users. The aim of this thesis is to verify web site accessibility for a selected portfolio of web sites according to defined accessibility standards. The document is divided into three chapters. First chapter unfolds and explains theory of standard accessibility, outlines original idea behind the World Wide Web and benefits of adhering to accessibility rules. This section also examines the concept of standard settings organizations, common rules for accessible web sites creation in Slovakia and abroad, main principles for accessible web sites and tools for testing web sites accessibility. For a better understanding of this document, the first chapter also includes a glossary of terms commonly used in web documentation creation. Second chapter focuses on the design and execution of the testing framework. The methodology is then applied to evaluate the accessibility of bank web sites by disabled users. The testing execution process underlines the key individual flaws which affect accessibility of web sites that must be addressed to enhance user’s experience. Third chapter presents accessibility testing results for selected web sites. In connection with testing results this chapter enables basic data processing with application of statistics methods and brings verification of accessibility testing of selected web sites. Anticipated contribution of this thesis is to increase awareness of web accessibility by assessing current accessibility status of bank web pages with presence in Slovak Republic.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá testovaním prístupnosti webových stránok. Cieľom práce je overenie prístupnosti vybraných webových sídiel podľa štandardov prístupnosti. Práca je rozdelená na tri časti. Prvá kapitola rozoberá a vysvetľuje teóriu štandardov prístupnosti, približuje pôvodnú myšlienku celosvetovej siete a prínosy dodržiavania pravidiel prístupnosti. V práci sú predstavené organizácie zaoberajúce sa tvorbou štandardov, najznámejšie pravidlá pre tvorbu prístupných webových stránok na Slovensku a v zahraničí, hlavné zásady prístupných webových stránok a formy testovania prístupnosti webových stránok. Pre lepšie pochopenie problematiky sú v prvej kapitole zahrnuté pojmy z oblasti tvorby webových dokumentov. Druhá kapitola obsahuje návrh a realizáciu testovania. Objektom skúmania bakalárskej práce je prístupnosť webových sídiel bankových inštitúcií pre hendikepovaných používateľov. Proces realizácie testovania ponúka prehľad jednotlivých nedostatkov, ktoré vplývajú na prístupnosť webového sídla. Tretia kapitola prezentuje výsledky testovania prístupnosti vybraných webových sídiel. V nadväznosti na výsledky testovania umožňuje základné spracovanie dát s využitím štatistických metód a prináša overenie testovania prístupnosti vybraných webových sídiel. Predpokladaným prínosom bakalárskej práce je zviditeľnenie problematiky prístupnosti prostredníctvom zhodnotenia stavu prístupnosti webových sídiel bánk so sídlom na území Slovenskej Republiky.
