Workplace violence from the nurses´ perspective

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jaká je četnost a jaké jsou formy agrese, se kterými se mohou setkat zdravotničtí pracovníci v praxi na konkrétních vybraných odděleních, a porovnat výskyt agrese na těchto pracovištích a ovlivnění výskytu agrese různými faktory. Ve svém výzkumu jsem se zaměřila na všeobecné a praktické sestry a záchranáře. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 133 sester z oddělení centrálního příjmu, kardiologie, ortopedie a psychiatrie dvou nemocnic Moravskoslezského kraje. Výzkumné šetření probíhalo v období od 15. 10. 2021 do 28. 2. 2022 standardizovaným dotazníkem VAPS - Výskyt agrese pacientů vůči sestrám při výkonu povolání. Výsledky: Výzkumným šetřením bylo zjištěno, že s verbální i fyzickou formou agrese se setkala většina respondentů. Nejčastější formou agrese je agrese verbální. Nejvíce incidentů se odehrálo na oddělení centrálního příjmu, nejméně na oddělení ortopedie. Výskyt násilných incidentů v podstatě není ovlivněn výzkumem sledovanými faktory. Závěr: Výskyt násilných incidentů je závažným problémem vyskytujícím se na různých typech oddělení. Výsledky výzkumného šetření přinesly podobné výsledky jako výsledky obdobných studií v jiných zemích. Velmi malé procento zaměstnanců absolvovalo edukaci v oblasti řešení konfliktů s agresivním pacientem.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of the work was to find out what is the frequency and forms of aggression that health professionals may encounter at work in specifically selected departments, and to compare the occurrence of aggression in these workplaces; together with the impact of aggression on various factors. In my research, I focused on general and practical nurses and paramedics. Methodology: The research group consisted of 133 nurses from the Department of hospital admission, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, and Psychiatry in two hospitals in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The 3-year period took place from 15th October 2021 to 28th February 2022 using the standardized was experienced by most respondents. The most common form of aggression was verbal questionnaire VAPS - Occurrence of aggression of patients towards nurses during their work. Results: The research found the verbal and physical forms of aggression. Most incidents took place in the hospital admission department and the least in the Orthopaedics department. The occurrence of violent incidents is essentially unaffected by the research factors. Conclusion: The occurrence of violent incidents is a serious problem experienced by health professionals across different types of wards. The outcome of the research survey yielded similar results that were found in comparable studies in other countries. A very small percentage of employees have been educated in resolving conflicts with aggressive patients.
