The Role of the Reader in the concept of Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Role čtenáře v pojetí Umberta Eca a Rolanda Barthese“ se zabývá problematikou kooperace mezi textem a čtenářem, a to v období 60. a částečně 70. let 20. století. V souvislosti s tímto se práce nejdříve zabývá nejznámějšími koncepty abstraktního čtenáře, které v tomto období vznikají, především konceptem implicitního čtenáře Wolfganga Isera. Stěžejním tématem je pak role čtenáře v pojetí Umberta Eca a Rolanda Barthese. V souvislosti s Umbertem Ecem se práce zabývá interpretací, jakožto dotvořením díla na základě jeho konfrontace se čtenářem, rozdílem mezi otevřeným a uzavřeným dílem, konceptem modelového čtenáře a tematikou fikčních možných světů. V souvislosti s Rolandem Barthesem se práce zabývá pojetím textu jako intertextu a s tím souvisejícím pojetím čtenáře jakožto „intertextuální nádoby“, která daný text vytváří.

Abstract:

Master’s thesis “The Role of the Reader in the concept of Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes” deals with problems regarding interpretive cooperation between a text and a reader. Chronologically the thesis is concerned with a time period of 60’s and partly 70’s of 20th century. The thesis deals with the most significant concepts of an abstract reader, which since 60’s have spread abundantly, above all the concept of implied reader of Wolfgang Iser. The central theme is a role of a reader in the concept of Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes. In connection with Umberto Eco the thesis deals with interpretation as the completion of a work by confrontation with a reader, with the difference between open and closed works, with the concept of the Model Reader and with the topic of a fictional possible worlds. In connection with Roland Barthes the thesis deals with the concept of a text as intertext and with the related concept of a reader as „intertextual container“, which creates the text.
