Overconsumption in the fashion industry: addressing fast-fashion through circular economy

Abstract:

This master's thesis investigates the potential for transforming Colombia's fast-fashion industry through the adoption of circular economy (CE) principles. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines a policy analysis of Colombia’s regulatory frameworks and a comparative case study of Chile’s advanced CE implementation. Primary data from surveys with retailers and consumers in Medellín identify a significant "intention-action gap," where general environmental awareness fails to translate into sustainable market behaviour. The findings reveal a critical knowledge deficit regarding specific CE concepts and a lack of sectoral textile programs within existing Colombian policy. Statistical evidence suggests that while general concern is high, only CE-specific literacy significantly predicts a consumer's willingness to pay for sustainable options (χ² (1) = 15.562, p < .001). The thesis concludes that Colombia can achieve a competitive advantage and economic resilience by implementing binding legislation and targeted policy interventions that bridge the gap between abstract sustainability and concrete circular market options.
