Interpretatiton of the Star Wave Test in the context of selected personality tests

Abstract:

Ve své práci jsem se rozhodla ověřit, zda lze Test hvězd a vln užívat jako metodu k zachycení deprese či úzkosti/úzkostnosti u kreslíře, tedy jestli existují jisté charakteristiky, které se v kresbě takového jedince objeví. Společně s kresbou jsem studentům třetích a čtvrtých ročníků gymnázií (N=397) v Brně administrovala dvě škály: první měřila depresivitu (BDI-II), druhá ve dvou subškálách zjišťovala úroveň úzkosti jako stavu a úzkostnosti jako rysu osobnosti (STAI X-1, X-2). Kresby na základě 91 kritérií hodnotili paralelně čtyři hodnotitelé (míra shody = 92,5 %). Pomocí binární logistické regrese jsem zjišťovala, jak se od sebe liší kresby jedinců v krajních oblastech škál od kreseb jedinců ve středu škál. Polovinu předpokladů autorky, která kresby analyzovala čistě grafologicky, jsem při testování hypotéz zamítla. V dalším zkoumání znaků se u všech škál objevila trojice parametrů pro kresbu, které se se zvýšenou šancí objeví u úzkostných/depresivních osob: formální pojetí kresby, rigiditu v prostorové struktuře a nezvykle pojatý obrázek. Test hvězd a vln je metoda, jejíž uplatnění by mělo být podrobeno dalšímu výzkumu, jednak u reprezentativního vzorku populace, ale hlavně v komparaci se standardizovanými testy, nikoli pouze s dalšími grafickými projektivními metodami.

Abstract:

I have decided to test if The Star-Wave Test can be used as a method for person´s anxiety/depression recognition, if there are any relation between the anxiety/depression and in the drawing of the students. Along with The Star-Wave Test, I administered two other scales to students (N=397) of third and fourth class of grammar schools in Brno: the first one measures depression (BDI-II), the second scale measures level of anxiety state and anxiety trait (STAI X-1, X-2). Drawings were rated in 91 criterions by four evaluators (compliance=92,5 %). Using binary logistic regression I found differences between the drawings of students in outer areas and the ones in the middle areas of the scales. I rejected half of the hypotheses of author‘s, who analyzed drawings in graphological way. In the following exploration of signs, I discovered triad of parameters for drawing, which is likely to be seen in the drawings of people with anxiety/ depression: formal mood of response, rigidity in space and unusual picture. This thesis work of mine states that Star-Wave test should be examined more at representative sample of population, mainly in comparison with standardized tests, not only with other graphic projective methods.
