Research of selected aspects of software testers motivation using the theory of self-determination

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá výzkumem vybraných aspektů motivace zaměstnanců, kteří pracují v odvětví testování softwaru. Testování softwarového produktu je klíčová činnost k zajištění jeho kvality. Práce je rozdělena na sedm částí. V první části se řeší teorie motivace v psychologii a vysvětluje se teorie sebeurčení. Ve druhé části je zmíněn výzkum motivace v softwarovém inženýrství.Třetí část popisuje metody, použité během výzkumu. S respondenty byly provedeny nahrávané rozhovory. Většina protokolu rozhovoru byla vytvořena v souladu s teorií sebeurčení. Rozhovory byly později přepsány do textové formy a byla použita analýza textu podle šablony kódů. Analýza textu proběhla v počítačovém programu. Ve čtvrté části jsou poznatky mého výzkumu. Pátá část popisuje typy motivace, které se objevily u jednotlivých respondentů. Šestá část ukazuje, jestli se v mé práci objevovaly stejné motivační faktory jako ve výzkumu ve druhé části. Také jsou zde uvedeny motivační a demotivační faktory, které mají, dle mého názoru, největší vliv na motivaci softwarových testerů.V sedmé části nakonec uvádím možné způsoby, jak motivovat testery softwaru. Jedná se o můj názor a o formu osobní reflexe nad poznatky, které vyplynuly z mého výzkumu. Na závěr uvádím splnění stanovených cílů, přínos mé práce a navrhuji její možné rozšíření.

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the analysis of selected aspects of motivation of the employees who work in branch of the software testing. The software testing of product is the key activity for quality assurance. The thesis is devaded into seven parts. The first part is about theory of motivation in psychology and explanation of self-determination theory. The second is about motivation research in software engineering. The third part describes the methods used during the research. Recorded interviews were conducted with respondents. Most of the protocol for interview was created in accordance with the self-determination theory. The interviews were later rewritten into text form and for that I used text analysis with a code template. The whole text analysis was made in a computer program. In the fourth part there are the findings of my research. The fifth part describes the types of motivation that occurred in individual respondents. The sixth part shows if the same motivation factors appeared in my work as in the research in the second part. There are also mentioned motivation and demotivation factors, which, in my opinion, have the biggest influence on motivation of software testers.Finally, in the seventh part, I present possible ways to motivate software testers. It is my opinion and a form of personal reflection on the knowledge that emerged from my research. In conclusion, I present the fulfillment of the set goals, the contribution of my work and suggest its possible extension.
