Children's conceptions of the desert at lower secondary schools pupils

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je diagnostikovat dětská pojetí pouště u žáků 2. stupně základních škol a konfrontovat je s obsahem učebnic. Na základě analýzy tématu biomu pouště v šesti vybraných učebnic zeměpisu byly zjištěny prvky prezentující pouště. Fotografie a text byly nejčastějšími prvky prezentující pouště ve vybraných učebnicích. Analyzované učebnice ve většině případů obsahovaly spíše prvky fyzicko-geografické, než prvky socioekonomické. Na základě kvantitativní analýzy kreseb pouští žáků, byly zjištěny nejčetněji se vyskytující prvky v kresbách pouští, konkrétně se jednalo o: písečnou poušť, slunce, duny, kaktusy, velbloudy, pyramidy a další. Kvalitativní analýzou kreseb pouští, doplněnou metodou rozhovoru, byla zjištěna dětská pojetí pouští. Většina žáků si pod pojmem poušť představí písečnou poušť v oblastech Afriky.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to diagnose children's conception of the desert in pupils in the 2nd level of elementary schools and to confront it with the content of textbooks. Elements presenting deserts were identified based on the analysis of the topic of desert biome in six selected geography textbooks. Photographs and text were the most common elements presenting deserts in selected textbooks. In most cases, the analysed textbooks contained physical-geographical elements rather than socio-economic elements. Based on a quantitative analysis of pupils' desert drawings, the most frequent elements in desert drawings were identified. Specifically, they were: sand desert, sun, dunes, cacti, camels, pyramids and more. Qualitative analysis of desert drawing supplemented by an interview method revealed children's conception of deserts. Most students think of the desert as a sandy desert in areas of Africa.
