The Environmental and Geopolitical Aspects of Antarctica

Abstract:

Antarktida se v současné době jeví jako dějiště budoucího geopolitického soupeření největších současných mocností a vybraných bývalých koloniálních mocností. Práce si klade za cíl charakterizovat nejdůležitější geopolitické a environmentální aspekty Antarktidy a nastínit roli klíčových aktérů a jejich ambice i zájmy na tomto kontinentě. S využitím analýzy relevantních zdrojů a dokumentů a jejich následné deskpripce či komparace lze dojít k závěru, že do určité míry environmentální aspekty korelují s geopolitickými ambicemi a zájmy států působících na Antarktidě. Z výsledků výzkumu lze také odvodit, že měnící se klimatické podmínky povedou ke zvyšování aktivity aktérů a jejich geopolitických zájmů v oblasti. Mezi nové aktéry, vykreslované jako hrozby pro tradiční aktéry a jejich územní nároky, patří zejména asijské státy, především Čína. Antarktický smluvní systém tak bude v budoucnu čelit velmi těžké zkoušce při snaze o zachování mírové spolupráce na Antarktidě.

Abstract:

Antarctica currently appears to be the scene of future geopolitical rivalry between the current greatest powers and selected former colonial powers. The thesis aims to characterize the most important geopolitical and environmental aspects of Antarctica, to outline the role of key actors and their ambitions and interests on this continent. Using the analysis of relevant sources and documents, their subsequent description and comparison, it can be concluded that to some extent the environmental aspects correlate with the geopolitical ambitions and interests of the states operating in Antarctica. Research also suggests that changing climatic conditions will increase the activity of actors and their geopolitical interests in the region. Asian states that are interested in Antarctica, especially China, are among the new actors portrayed as a threat to traditional actors and their territorial claims. As a result, maintaining peaceful cooperation in Antarctica will be a very difficult challenge in the future for the Antarctic Treaty System.
