Adam Guide to the Galaxy or concepts and typological constructs of sci-fi genre in Czech cinematography

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá tematickým rozborem a typologií postav science fiction v české kinematografii v období 50. – 80. let minulého století. K analýze těchto konceptů byly vybrány jako primární zdroje následující filmy Cesta do pravěku, Vynález zkázy, Ikarie XB1, Muž z prvního století, Kybernetická babička, Konec srpna v hotelu Ozon a další. Práce vychází ze soudobých recenzí, percepce tvůrců filmů v dobovém kontextu atd. V první části je nejdříve definována terminologie science fiction v literatuře, vybrané subžánry sci-fi, jako jsou utopie, antiutopie nebo kyberpunk. Dále se studie zabývá vývojem žánrového filmu z pohledu estetického a kulturně-politického kontextu. Následující kapitola je věnována konceptům obvyklém v tomto žánrovém filmu, jako jsou cestování v čase a prostoru, utopie a antiutopie. Studie se danými koncepty zabývá z pohledu dobového kontextu, kdy zástupci českých filmů jsou konfrontováni se žánrovými snímky světové provenience. V poslední části se práce zabývá podrobněji typologií postav v žánru sci-fi. Jako příklady těchto charakterů byly vybrány mimozemské bytosti, bytosti z budoucnosti, roboti a další. Cílem studie je pak tematický rozbor konceptů, typologických charakterů a především vymezení specifika filmových tvůrců v bývalém Československu poválečné a současné (do 80. let 20. století) kinematografie.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis is interested in an analysis of thematic concepts and a science fiction figures typology in the Czech cinematography from 1950s to 1980s. For analysis of concepts were chosen as primary sources these films: Journey into the Primeval Times, Invention of Destruction, Icarus XB 1, The Man from the First Century, The Cybernetic Grandma, Late August at the Hotel Ozone and others. The thesis issues from contemporary reviews, film autors's perceptions in a period context etc. Firstly it defines a terminology of the science-fiction in a literature, some selected subgenres of the science-ficiton such as utopia, anti-utopia and cyberpunk. The other part of the thesis sketches an evolution of genre film from perspective of esthetic and culture-politics context. The following part devotes to concepts typical for this film genre, such as travelling in time and space, utopia and anti-utopia. The study is interested in these concepts from perspective of contemporary context where are the representatives of Czech films in a confrontation with genre’s movies of world provenances. The last part of the thesis makes specific the science-fiction figures typology. Such examples of these characters were chosen: alien creatures, creatures from future, robots and others are some examples for these characters. The conclusion of this bachelor thesis is an analysis of concepts, character typology and above all a delimination of film's creators specifics in former Czechoslovakia in a postwar and present cinematography (until 1980s).
