Fantasy Genres of Chinese Internet Literature

Abstract:

Magisterská práce se zabývá současnými žánry čínské internetové fantasy literatury, konkrétně qihuan, xuanhuan a xiuxian. Obecně vzato, žánry čínské fantasy v sobě spojují elementy vyskytující se v západních fantasy románech s elementy tradiční čínské kultury, a těší se masivní popularitě nejen v Číně, ale i v zahraničí. Čínská internetová literatura se vyvinula v rozšířený fenomén s vlastními specifiky a terminologií. Z tohoto důvodu je jedním z cílů této práce poskytnout základní úvod do diskurzu čínské internetové literatury západnímu čtenáři, společně s popisem relevantních termínů a stručným přehledem historického vývoje. Hlavním cílem magisterské práce je poté představení a analýza výše zmíněných fantasy žánrů, příbuzných termínů a zodpovězení výzkumných otázek: Jaké jsou narativní konvence tří internetových fantasy žánrů qihuan, xuanhuan a xiuxian? Jak jsou termíny používány čtenáři? Došlo k transformaci konceptu žánru v rámci diskurzu internetové literatury? Otázky budou zodpovězeny na základě analýzy tří internetových fantasy románů - Panlong (Svinutý drak), Douluo Dalu (Kontinent Douluo) a Xianni (Nesmrtelný renegát) - společně s analýzou relevantního online obsahu vytvořeného fanoušky čínské internetové literatury.

Abstract:

The main focus of this thesis are the contemporary genres of Chinese Internet fantasy literature, namely qihuan, xuanhuan, and xiuxian. Generally speaking, Chinese fantasy genres fuse elements of Western fantasy with elements of traditional Chinese culture and enjoy mass popularity both in China and abroad. The Chinese Internet literature developed into widespread phenomenon, with its own terminology and specifics. Therefore, one of the goals of this thesis is to provide a basic introduction of the Chinese Internet literature discourse to the Western reader, with the description of relevant terms and brief overview of its history. The main goal is then to introduce and analyse above mentioned fantasy genres, and related terms, and to answer research questions: What are the narrative conventions of three Internet fantasy genres qihuan, xuanhuan, and xiuxian? How are the terms used by its readers? Does the concept of genre transform within the Internet literature discourse? This will be done based on analysis of three Internet fantasy novels – Panlong (Coiling Dragon), Douluo Dalu (Soul Land), and Xianni (Renegade Immortal), along with the analysis of relevant fan-made online content.
